Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Maggie Phillips not only had her first career goal Friday night, she finished with a hat trick to lead Johns Hopkins past visiting Kean, 6-3, in both teams' season-opener. The Blue Jays had four different players score and six players notched atleast one point in their first game versus the Cougars since 2004.

All-American Olivia Triano put the visitors on the board early, scoring the first of her two goals just over six minutes in when she intercepted a pass, dribbled left to right across the circle and buried a low shot inside the right post. Nine minutes later, Philips knotted the score at 1-1 for her first career goal, on a hard shot from about 10 yards out. She then put Hopkins on top for good with 22:48 to play in the half. Sophomore Sarah Henderson hit a long pass from 30 yards out that Phillips redirected just under the outstretched foot of Cougars' goalie Erin Langan. Senior Carly Bianco pushed the Blue Jays' lead to two with just over a minute to play as she fired home a corner strike from classmate Olivia Ross.

The second half started out the same as the first with Kean getting an early goal. Stephanie Soares took a corner for the Cougars, sending the ball out to Triano, who fired a shot and Soares redirected it past senior Kim Stein to make it a 3-2 game. Once again, Phillips answered, completing her hat trick with just over 12 minutes gone in the half. Bianco lifted a high shot on the Kean cage and Langan got a blocker on it, but the ball deflected back and off the cross bar and then ricocheted to Phillips, who buried it to put Hopkins back up by two.

Triano got one back for Kean with 15 minutes to play, scoring off a quick restart just outside the Hopkins circle. Howerver, 50 seconds later, the Blue Jays' lead was back to two on a goal from junior Liane Tellier. Henderson fired a pass across the circle, that Langan deflected, unfortunately for the Cougars, the ball went right to Tellier, who was all alone 10 yards out. She stepped up and banged home her first of the season. A minute and a half later, JHU converted a corner to take a 6-3 lead. Tellier struck the corner for the Blue Jays, sending the ball up top to Bianco, who passed it left to senior Ali Bahneman and she fired home just her second career goal.

Phillips hat trick was the first for Hopkins since Emily Miller scored four against Dickinson on October 1, 2008, while Bianco added a goal and an assist. Stein finished with one save in just over 48 minutes of action. Junior Elizabeth Peijnenburg finished out the game and made three saves. For the Cougars, Triano had a hand in all three scores with two goals and an assist. Langan finished with 11 saves in goal, while Julie Knodt added a defensive save.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, September 6 as the Blue Jays host fifth-ranked Lebanon Valley at 5:00 pm at Homewood Field.
