NEWPORT NEWS, VA - The 17th-ranked Christopher Newport field hockey team got six points from Caitlin Cahill en route to a 6-0 win over visiting Johns Hopkins non-conference action Sunday. The Blue Jays fall to 5-3 on the season, while the Captains improve to 5-2.
Cahill put the Captains on the board early, scoring the first of her two goals just 3:22 into the game. She then assisted on Chrissy Kurecki's strike at 10:27 as the home team took a 2-0 lead. Cahill got her second goal less than seven minutes later on another unassisted tally.
The Captains pushed their lead to four nearly 20 minutes into the second half when they capitalized on a corner. Paige Childers took the corner for CNU and Cahill stopped the pass for Shelby Judkins, who then fired a shot home to make it a 4-0 game. Just over five minutes later, Meghan Sullivan would score off an assist from Childers, while Hilary St. Mary closed out the scoring with just 1:25 to play on a helper from Lindsay Hendricks.
Senior Kim Stein made nine saves in the loss for the Blue Jays, while Jamie Dowling and Julie Collins combined to make three saves for the Captains, who also got a defensive save from Brianna Milne CNU held the advantage in shots (18-7) and corners (15-7).
Hopkins returns to action and Centennial Conference play on Saturday, October 1 as the Blue Jays will face the Swarthmore Garnet on the road. Game time is set for noon.
