WASHINGTON, DC - George Washington's Daniel Tyner netted a career-high nine goals and the Colonials' water polo team edged Johns Hopkins, 14-13, in CWPA Southern Division action at a raucous Charles E. Smith Center Saturday night. The Blue Jays fall to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the Southern Division, while the Colonials improves to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Tyner pumped in five second-half goals, including four after Johns Hopkins took a 9-8 lead with 54 seconds remaining in the third quarter, to lead GW to victory. He tied the contest at 9-9 with 39 seconds to play in the period and then added three goals in the opening 2:06 of the fourth quarter to help the Colonials to a 13-10 advantage.
The Blue Jays charged back behind goals from juniors Ross Schofield and Kielan Crowto pull within 13-12 with 1:48 to play. GW drew an ejection on its next possession and called timeout with 1:36 remaining. Adam Streeter converted a skip shot nine seconds out of the stoppage for what proved to be the game-winning goal.
Senior Mark Strickland again drew the visitors within a goal with 63 seconds to play and the Blue Jays had an opportunity to force overtime, but junior Alex Whittamwhistled a shot wide and the Colonials ran out the final 30 seconds.
Tyner opened the scoring 89 seconds into the contest, but Hopkins responded by taking a 2-1 edge midway through the first quarter. GW answered back with a 6-1 run to close the half - including three goals from Tyner - to enjoy a 7-3 cushion at intermission. Schofield scored three of his team-high five goals in the third quarter as JHU briefly took a 9-8 lead, only to have Tyner take control and propel GW to its first win in the series since 2004 - a span of 18 games.
Hopkins returns to action in two weeks at the annual Claremont Convergence.
