BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team stayed alive in the hunt for a postseason berth with a 2-1 win over visiting McDaniel Tuesday night in Centennial Conference action at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays even their record at 8-8 overall and are now 5-4 in the conference, tied with the Ursinus Bears in the fifth and final playoff spot. The Green Terror fall to 8-8 on the season and 3-6 in the conference, eliminating them from playoff contention.
Hopkins struck twice in a span of less than three minutes early in the second half on virtually identical goals to take a 2-0 lead in the game. Junior Maddie Fryer put the Blue Jays on the board at 39:52 off a penalty corner. Freshman Elena Gresick received the ball off the corner and passed to the left to junior Storm Kodde. She then put a hard shot on cage that Fryer tipped in at the right post for her third goal in the last two games. Phillips then scored what proved to be more than just an insurance goal at 42:43 with her eighth of the season. She inserted a corner for the Blue Jays and once again, Kodde took a hard shot and Phillips tipped it over McDaniel goalie Vicci Alexander to make it a two-goal game.
The Green Terror weren't going away despite the deficit and cashed in at the 48:25-mark to cut the deficit in half. Lara Haab got a shot off a McDaniel corner and senior Elizabeth Peijnenburgmade the save, but the officials called a stroke when the ball got caught under the Blue Jay keeper. Sara Reynolds took the stroke for the visitors and flipped into the left side of the cage to make it 2-1. That score would hold as Hopkins picked up a critical win in the league standings.
Peijnenburg finished with 13 saves while Phillips also had a defensive save, in the win. Alexander stopped nine shots and got defensive saves from Paige Messersmith and Bayley Vohs. McDaniel had a slim 21-20 edge in shots, while Hopkins had a 17-11 advantage in corners.
Hopkins closes out the regular season on Friday, October 26 as the Blue Jays travel to the Battlefield to take on the Gettysburg Bullets. Game time is slated for 3:30 pm at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
