GETTYSBURG, PA - Host Gettysburg scored a pair of second half goals to defeat Johns Hopkins, 2-0, in both teams' regular season finale Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays slip to 8-9 overall and in the Centennial Conference, while the Bullets improve to 12-4 and 7-3 in the league. Hopkins currently sits in sixth place in the conference standings and must await Saturday's results to learn its postseason fate. Gettysburg, meanwhile clinched the three seed with its win.
After a scoreless first half that saw a combined 12 saves from the Blue Jays' Elizabeth Peijnenburg and the Bullets Megan Feeg, Gettysburg got on the board at 46:17. Hayward Sawers inserted a corner for the Bullets, sending the ball to Liz Baron, who flipped a pass to Kelly Madden. After a slight deflection, Madden sent a hard roller past a diving Peijnenburg and inside the left post for what stood as the game-winning goal.
Just about 10 minutes later, Gettysburg was awarded a penalty stroke and Ally Duggan converted it to stake the home team to a two-goal lead. Feeg would make the lead stand as she made six of her saves inside the final 12 minutes of the game.
Peijnenburg finished with seven saves while freshman Kiana Duncan added a defensive save in the loss. For the Bullets, Feeg stopped 13 saves and got a defensive stop from Lexie Mowery to earn the shutout. Hopkins outshot Gettysburg, 21-18, while the Bullets had an 18-14 advantage in corners.
In order to make the Centennial Conference Tournament for the eighth straight season, Hopkins needs a Muhlenberg win over Ursinus on Saturday. All three teams would be tied with a 5-5 record and the Blue Jays would get the playoff bid due to their wins over both the Mules and the Bears. Ursinus and Muhlenberg are set to square off at 12:00 pm in Collegeville, PA.
