BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team spotted visiting Ursinus an early one-goal lead, but scored the final three goals of the game to beat the Bears 3-1. The Blue Jays improve to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the Centennial Conference as they earn their first regular season win over the Bears, who fall to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Samantha Macchio gave the Bears the opening goal just 6:13 into the game with her first goal of the season. Alex Shafi sent a long ball into the circle from the right side, Macchio collected the pass, turned and backhanded a shot past senior Elizabeth Peijnenburg. The Blue Jays answered however, tying the game up less than nine minutes later as they capitalized off a penalty corner. Senior Maggie Phillips inserted the corner, sending the ball up top to classmate Liane Tellier. She in turned hit a hard pass to freshman Shannon Parker, who redirected it past Paige McElhenny to knot the score.

Hopkins would take the lead in the half, as freshman Elena Gresick scored her second of the season at 27:07. The Blue Jays got a pair of shots off a corner, but McElhenny turned away both and the Bears were attempting to clear when Gresick intercepted a clearing pass and banged home the go-ahead goal. Senior Meghan Kellett then tacked on an insurance goal with just over three minutes to play. Tellier played a long a ball ahead of the defense to Kellett, who drew McElhenny to the top of the circle, before slipping a shot past her to make it 3-1.

Peijnenburg finished with eight saves, while getting three defensive saves from her teammates, to earn the win. McElhenny made six saves and got a defensive save from Nora Kornfield. Ursinus outshot Hopkins, 20-12, and had the edge in corners (12-7). The win is just the second ever for the Blue Jays over the Bears as Hopkins last beat Ursinus 1-0 in the Centennial Conference semifinals en route to the 2003 CC title.

Hopkins returns to action on Thursday, October 11 as fifth-ranked Mary Washington visits Homewood Field. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 7:00 pm start.
