CLAREMONT, CA - The Johns Hopkins water polo team had a successful trip to southern California, going 3-1 at the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament. Hopkins defeated a pair of top-five Division III teams, including number one Pomona-Pitzer. The Blue Jays are now 17-5 on the season, matching their win total for each of the previous four seasons.

Hopkins opened the two-day tournament with a dominating 19-5 win over Occidental. Senior Ross Schofield paced the offense with a five-goal, three-assist outing. Classmate Alex Whittam chipped in a hat trick with also grabbing three steals, while junior Thomas de Lyon and sophomore Johnny Beal each scored two goals. The Jays jumped all over the Tigers, scoring the game's first 10 goals en route to win. Sophomore Danny Ovelar made five saves while freshman Erik Henrikson made four.

Fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tripped up Hopkins in the nightcap on Friday night, topping the Blue Jays 11-7, for their third straight win in the series. Schofield led the way again with three goals, while Whittam added a pair. Freshman Kevin Yee chipped in a goal and an assist. Ovelar made two saves, while Henrikson had seven.

Hopkins rebounded the next morning, taking down top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer, 10-9 on Schofield's goal with 6:39 to play in the fourth quarter. Hopkins got on top early with a pair of goals from Whittam, before Jarrod Gaut sandwiched a pair around a strike from sophomore Wes Hopkins and JHU led 3-2 after one quarter. The teams traded goals throughout the second quarter, ending with a Schofield goal with 11 seconds on the clock to give Hopkins a 6-5 lead at the break. Pomona tied it up and then took the lead with back-to-back goals to open the third, but Hopkins scored three of the final five goals to make it a 9-9 match heading into the fourth. Schofield's tally less than 90 seconds into the quarter was the only goal of the period and held up to be the winner. Schofield had a hat trick, while Whittam and Hopkins each added a pair of goals and a pair of steals. Ovelar finished with six saves and Henrikson made five.

The Blue Jays wrapped up their trip with a 10-4 win over the Redlands Bulldogs, ranked seventh in Division III. Hopkins jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first quarter and led 5-1 at the half. The teams were even in the third quarter to make it a 7-3 match heading into the final stanza, but the Blue Jays dashed any hopes of a rally as they outscored the Bulldogs, 3-1, to take the win. Schofield, de Lyon and junior Stephen Kingery each scored two goals to lead the offense, while Whittam added a pair of helpers. Ovelar and Henrikson each made five saves in the win. It is just the second win for Hopkins over Redlands in the series and the first since 2005.

Hopkins returns to action and league play on Wednesday, October 10 as the Jays host the14th-ranked Navy Midshipmen. The match is set to start at 4:00 pm in the Newton White Athletic Center.
