Blue Jays Upended by Pioneers

CHANDLER, AZ - The Johns Hopkins baseball team wrapped up its spring break trip to Arizona with a 21-4 loss to William Paterson, Saturday afternoon. William Paterson used a 10-run fourth inning to lead the Pioneers past the Blue Jays.

The Pioneers (11-4) scored 10 runs on eight hits in the top of the fourth to break open the game. The Pioneers sent 14 men to the plate, while four collected an extra base hit including a grand slam from Adam Derner. Derner finished the day going 4-for-5 at the plate with seven RBIs and three runs scored.

The Blue Jays got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Aaron Borenstein singled up the middle and stole second to move into scoring position for junior Jeff Lynch. Lynch followed with a single up the middle to bring Borenstein home and give Hopkins (9-7-2) a 1-0 lead.

The Pioneers came right back and scored three runs on four hits and a sacrifice fly in the top of the second to take the lead, 3-1. The Blue Jays answer with two in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at three. Seniors J.R. Santaniello and Mike Musary drew back-to-back walks after sophomore Richie Carbone led off the inning getting hit by a pitch. Junior Adam Weiner singled through the right side to score Carbone. Junior Kyle Neverman hit a sacrifice to center to push Santaniello across the plate and tie the game.

William Paterson scored twice in the third to re-take the lead at 5-3 and added two more in the fifth after its 10-run fourth to lead 17-3 after five innings.

The Blue Jays added their final run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Scott Barrett and Santanellio hit back-to-back singles before Musary drew a walk to load the bases. Senior Joe Hemmes hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly to center to score Barrett.

The Pioneers added four more runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to cap their scoring and take a 21-4 victory over the Blue Jays.

Johns Hopkins was led by Weiner at the plate. Weiner went 2-for-2 with an RBI on the day. Senior Sam Eagleson took the loss for the Blue Jays on the mound after throwing 3 2/3 innings, giving up 10 runs, nine earned, on 10 hits and two walks. Eagleson picked up the Blue Jays lone strikeout on the day.

Hopkins will return to action when the Blue Jays open their conference schedule with a host of Dickinson on March 27. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm at the JHU Baseball Diamond.
