BALTIMORE, MD – The No. 6/9 Johns Hopkins baseball team bounced back in emphatic fashion Tuesday afternoon, riding a pair of three-run blasts from
Jacob Harris to a 16-5 victory over Washington College. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 28-8 overall and 11-4 in Centennial Conference play.
Hopkins wasted no time providing support for starting pitcher
Michael Yousef (6-1), building a 5-0 lead over the first two innings.
Lukas Geer opened the scoring with an RBI groundout in the first before
Clay Hartje followed with a two-run double. The Blue Jays kept the pressure on in the second, adding runs on a
Luke Baker sacrifice fly and an RBI single from
Alex Shane.
Yousef turned in an efficient outing, working 5.0 innings while striking out five and walking none. He allowed three runs on seven hits and retired nine of the first 13 batters he faced to earn his sixth win of the season.
After the Shoremen (21-16, 9-6 CC) managed a lone run in the top of the fourth, the Blue Jays put the game out of reach with a seven-run barrage in the home half. Harris provided the spark, lofting a three-run home run just inside the foul pole to push the lead to 8-1. A sequence of back-to-back singles and a Shoremen defensive error allowed three more runs to cross before
Keiffer Ary capped the rally with a sacrifice fly, making it an 11-run ballgame.
Washington College showed signs of life in the fifth with a two-run homer from Reese Hirsh, but Harris quickly halted any momentum in the sixth. With two runners on, he launched his second three-run homer of the game to cap the scoring at 16-5.
William Hancock was flawless in relief, slamming the door by retiring all five batters he faced—three via the strikeout—to secure the victory.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, April 24, traveling to Chestertown, MD, to complete the home-and-home series against Washington College. First pitch at Athey Park is set for 3:30 p.m.
