YORK, PA - Host York College held on for a 1-0 win over Johns Hopkins in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday afternoon at Graham Field. The Blue Jays slip to 3-3-0 on the season while the Spartans improve to 6-1-1 with their third straight win.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams with quality chances, sophomore Kotaro Mitsuhashi nearly got his team on the board in the 68th minute when he dribbled into the box and beat a diving Jesse Derksen, but his shot rang off the cross bar and York was able to clear. Less than two minutes later, Taylor Brummitt missed on a chance when he was able to avoid sophomore Nick Cerrone, who came out to challenge, but his shot went wide of the post by about two feet.
It was York that would end the scoreless drought in the 72nd minute. Chris Weaver crossed the ball from the right end line, across the face of the Hopkins' goal, and a Blue Jay defender attempted to clear it, the ball skidded off his foot and into the net. York nearly took a two-goal lead just over a minute later, but senior Brandon Sumpio cleared Cody Pearson's shot off the line to keep it a one-goal game.
Hopkins would step up its pressure in the ensuing minutes, but the visitors could not find the equalizer. York earns its first win over Hopkins since September 10, 2008 at Graham Field. It is the first game in the last five meetings that ended in regulation and the Blue Jays were 1-0-3 in the series since their last loss to the Spartans.
York had 18 shots to 10 for Hopkins, while the home team also had the advantage in corners (7-1). Cerrone finished with four saves while his counterpart, Derksen, also had four stops.
Hopkins returns to action and Centennial Conference play on Saturday, September 22 as the Blue Jays travel to Allentown, PA to take on rival Muhlenberg. Game time is set for 7:00 pm at Varsity Field.
