COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Host Ursinus scored six first half goals en route to a 10-4 win over Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference field hockey action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 5-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference while the Bears improve to 7-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference. Junior Alexa Lantiere led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals in the loss.
Ursinus pushed out to a quick three-goal lead in the game's first 15 minutes behind two goals from Devin Brakel. Hopkins got on the board at 24:16 when Lantiere scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season. She finished a rebound off a Lindsey Adams' shot to get the Jays' on the scoreboard. The Bears answered however with four straight, including a pair from Megan Keenan, in a run that bridged halftime as they took a 7-1 lead with more nearly 32 minutes left in the game.
Sophomore Kiana Duncan ended the Ursinus run with her third of the season at 40:51 to make it a 7-2 game. Ursinus answered however with back-to-back goals by Samantha Macchio and Amber Steigerwalt to stake the Bears to a 9-2 lead with 23 minutes to play. Lantiere and sophomore Elena Gresick responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to five, but Ursinus would get one more before the final whistle to account for the final score.
Sophomore Zoey Atabek finished with 15 saves while also getting a defensive save from Gresick. Danielle DeSpirito finished with four saves and also got defensive saves from Jordan Miller and Aliki Torrence.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 9 as the Blue Jays host the eight-ranked and unbeaten Mary Washington Eagles. Game time for the non-conference tilt is slated for 4:00 pm.
