PROVIDENCE, RI - Eighth-seeded Johns Hopkins faced a familiar foe in George Washington in the opening game of the 2013 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship on Friday morning. The ninth-seeded Colonials beat the Blue Jays, 5-3, to even the season series and advance to the championship bracket. Hopkins (19-10) slips to the consolation bracket and will Fordham.
Nate Little opened the scoring just 42 seconds into the match before the Blue Jays' pulled even on a man-up goal by junior Wes Hopkins less than a minute later. The Blue Jays then took a 2-1 lead on sophomore Kevin Yee's goal with 5:44 to play. Bogdan Petkovic answered for George Washington with just 16 ticks on the clock to knot the score at two-all at the quarter break.
After a scoreless second quarter, Daniel Tyner put the Colonials back on top with his goal at 5:13 in the third. The lead didn't last long however as freshman Matt Fraser scored just 66 seconds later to tie the match at three. Alec Sedlachek scored late in the quarter to give GW the lead again. Paul Deasey was the only player score in the final eight minutes, giving the Colonials a two-goal cushion with 2:51 to play in the match.
Hopkins and junior Johnny Beal led the Blue Jays with two points apiece while Fraser drew four ejections. Sophomore Erik Henrikson made 11 stops in the goal while allowing just five goals.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday at 11:00 am and will face 12th-seeded Fordham. The Rams lost to the host Brown Bears, 12-4, on Friday afternoon.
