BALTIMORE, MD - Junior Aravind Menon, sophomore John Petrie and freshman Patrick Rose won a combined 33 bouts to lead the Johns Hopkins men's fencing team to a 4-1 record at the JHU Invitational on Sunday. Hopkins earned wins over Army (18-9), Hunter (19-8), NJIT (20-7) and Yeshiva (23-4) and dropped a tough 14-13 decision to Stevens Tech.

Hopkins kicked things off by defeating Army with a sweep of all three weapons. The Blue Jays won easily in the Foil, 8-1, behind Petrie and junior Robert Goldhirsch with three wins apiece. The Epee and Sabre were much closer as JHU won each by a 5-4 score. In the Epee, sophomore Mark Zimmermann and freshman Nathaniel Green each picked up two wins and Zimmermann clinched the win in the final bout. The Jays rallied in the Sabre, winning the final three bouts to take the win. Junior Paul Vitale and Rose won two bouts apiece with Rose clinching the win.

Hopkins then dropped a heartbreaker to Stevens as the Ducks won the Foil and the Epee. Petrie, Goldhirsch and sophomore Glenn Balbus each won a bout in the Foil as Stevens won 6-3. In the Epee, Zimmermann won all three of his bouts but the Jays lost a tough one 5-4. Rose led Hopkins to a 6-3 win in the Sabre by winning all three of his bouts.

The Blue Jays rebounded with a 19-8 win over the Hawks after claiming the Foil and Sabre. Petrie and senior Evan Stafford got Hopkins going with an 8-1 win in the Foil as the pair combined for six wins. Hunter then pulled out a tough 5-4 win in the Epee, despite two wins from sophomore Brent Schottenfeld. The Blue Jays would easily win the Sabre, 7-2, as Rose and Menon each won three bouts.

Hopkins followed with a win over NJIT, sweeping all three weapons. Sophomore Jonathan Mui won all three of his bouts to pace the Jays to a 7-2 win in the Foil. Schottenfeld also won all three of his bouts as Hopkins claimed the Epee, 7-2. Menon turned the same trick in the Sabre, going 3-0, to lead the Jays to a 6-3 win.

The Blue Jays closed out the day with the win over the Maccabees and a sweep of all three weapons. Stafford, Petrie and Mui did lose a bout in the Foil, going a combined 9-0. The Epee was more closely contested, but the Blue Jays would win 6-3, and Green led the way going 3-0. The Sabre saw the Jays lose just once, led by Menon's 3-0 mark.

Petrie paced the Blue Jays in the Foil as he went 11-3 on the day and is now 22-4 on the season. In fact, he ended the day with 99 career wins. Zimmerman won nine of his 11 bouts, including the 100th of his career, to lead Hopkins in the Epee. He is now 15-6 on the season and 106-52 for his career. And in the Sabre, it was Rose and Menon leading the Jays with 11 wins apiece. Rose went 11-3 while Menon went 11-1.

Hopkins returns to action on December 8 at the annual Brandeis Invitational in Waltham, MA.
