LEXINGTON, VA - Four different players scored as Johns Hopkins defeated host Washington & Lee, 4-0, in both teams' season-opener Friday afternoon. Sophomore Zoey Atabek earned the shutout in her first career collegiate start and the Blue Jays improved to 10-0 all-time against the Generals.
Senior Allison Thompson got the offense going early, scoring just 2:37 into the game. Stepping just inside the right side of the circle, Thompson fired a shot inside the left post for the season's first goal. About 19 minutes later, senior Sarah Henderson came up with a big stop to keep Washington & Lee scoreless. Victoria Van Natten ripped a shot off a Generals' corner that beat Atabek, but Henderson was there to clear the ball of the line.
Junior Alexa Lantiere pushed the Blue Jays' lead to two at the 26:27 on a shot to the left corner from the right side of the circle. The Generals had a great opportunity to cut the deficit in half just before halftime on a counterattack following a Jays' corner. Candice Stefanik found herself all alone, streaking to the cage. Atabek came out to the top of the circle to challenge Stefanik and her shot went wide.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, senior Shelby Graham scored off a deflection in front of W&L goalie Megan Axelrod and Hopkins' lead was three. Freshman Liz Stillman closed out the scoring with a beauty of a first career collegiate goal. Dribbling into the circle, she fired a wicked backhander past Axelrod as she fell to the ground at 61:23. Atabek would make one final save with just 1:35 to play to preserve the shutout.
Atabek finished with four saves in earning her first career shutout, while her counterpart Axelrod made eight stops. She also got three defensive saves from her Generals' teammates. Hopkins outshot Washington & Lee, 20-8, and had an 8-6 edge in corners.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 7 as JHU hosts Denison. Game time at Homewood Field is slated for 11:00 am.
