PRINCETON, NJ - The Johns Hopkins water polo team defeated Harvard and Penn as the Blue Jays went 3-1 at the Princeton Invitational. The Blue Jays defeated the Crimson, 11-9, in the morning and followed with a 13-4 win over the Quakers. Hopkins is now 7-1 on the season with its only loss coming to 16th-ranked Santa Clara.
Hopkins trailed 6-4 to Harvard at the half but rallied to take an 8-7 lead late in the third quarter. But the Crimson got a late goal to make it an 8-8 game heading into the fourth quarter. Midway through the final stanza, sophomore goalie Erik Henrikson blocked a five-meter shot and the Blue Jays earned a five-meter of their own on the counter attack. Junior Johnny Bealconverted and Hopkins led 10-9. The Jays got another quick goal and held on for the final three minutes to win 11-9.
Beal led the Blue Jays with a career-high five goals, while also handing out and assist in the win. Junior Wes Hopkinschipped in two goals with an assist and also had a pair of blocks. Henrikson finished with 13 saves and two steals to earn the win in the goal.
Hopkins had it a little easier in its afternoon match, pushing out to a 5-1 halftime lead and then outscoring the Quakers, 8-3, in the second. Senior Thomas de Lyon and freshman Matt Fraser led Hopkins offensively with three goals apiece. De Lyon also drew two ejections and handed out a pair of assists. Sophomore Kevin Yee scored a goal and dished out three assists, while Hopkins also had three helpers. Junior Danny Ovelarstopped 14 of the 18 shots he faced, while also grabbing a steal and handing out an assist in the win.
JHU opens its conference slate and its home schedule on Saturday, September 21 as 14th-ranked Princeton visits the Newton White Athletic Center. The CWPA Southern Division match is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
