Oct. 22, 2014 GW Box Score
BALTIMORE, MD - Visiting George Washington got hat tricks from three players en route to a 13-11 win over Johns Hopkins Wednesday night in CWPA water polo action. The Blue Jays slip to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the CWPA Southern Division, while the Colonials improve to 9-9 and pick up their first division win (1-5).
Hopkins held early leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before a four-goal run by GW gave the visitors a 5-2 lead with 6:12 to play in the second quarter. The Blue Jays answered back with goals from senior co-captain Johnny Beal and junior Kevin Yee, to pull within one just 86 seconds later. Ridvan Pehlivan and Pierce Deamer then sandwiched goals around a strike from freshman Jono Gillette and the Colonials led 7-5 at the half.
Coming out of the half, sophomore Giovanni Cragnotti scored to cut the deficit in half. But GW came right back with a pair of goals just 50 seconds apart to push out to a three-goal lead at 9-6. Hopkins answered with a two-goal spurt of its own as freshman Conor Hehir and Beal scored to pull the Blue Jays back within one. However, that's as close as the Colonials would let the Jays get as they scored four of the next five goals to take a 13-9 lead with 4:32 to play. Hopkins would slice the deficit in half with goals from senior co-captain Wes Hopkins and sophomore Matt Fraser, but that would be all.
Beal, Hopkins, Fraser and Gillette each had a pair of goals for the Blue Jays and junior goalie Erik Henrikson made nine saves in the cage. Pehlivan, Bogdan Petkovic and Brian Mojica each tallied hat tricks for the Colonials.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 25 as the Blue Jays host the Midshipmen of the US Naval Academy. The CWPA Southern Division match is slated for a 2:00 pm start at the Newton White Athletic Center.
