BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team got goals from six different players as the Blue Jays beat the visiting Swarthmore Garnet, 7-0, in Centennial Conference action Friday night. The Blue Jays even their record at 5-5 overall and improve to 2-1 in the CC, while the Garnet fall to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Senior Lucy Woodrow put the Blue Jays on the board early, scoring at the 12:58-mark for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Austin Davis dribbled into the circle and sent a short pass to Woodrow, who banged it home for her third of the season. Hopkins then got a pair of goals just 54 seconds apart to extend its lead to 3-0 by 24:48. Freshman Morgan Pothast dribbled along the right end line before passing into junior Natalie Vicas, who one-timed it past Ainsley Parrish for the first of her two goals on the night. Just a short time later, junior Kiana Duncan dribbled in from the left side, beating a pair of Garnet defenders on the way, and firing a low, hard shot just inside the near post.
Hopkins got one more before the half as the Jays took a 4-0 lead on senior Alexa Lantiere's goal at 32:04. Freshman Princess Sutherland dribbled into the circle from near half field before passing out wide to Lantiere near the right post. She then slipped a shot past Parrish and inside the far post. Pothast was on the receiving end of the next Blue Jay goal as they pushed out to a 5-0 lead early in the second half. Davis picked up her second assist when she passed the ball across the mouth of the goal and Pothast one-timed it home at the 47:27-mark.
Vicas added to the Blue Jays lead less than eight minutes later on a nice tip. Junior Leslie MacManus struck a hard ball from a few yards outside the circle and Vicas redirected it to the right post. Sophomore Liz Stillman closed out the scoring at 68:17 when she blasted a shot from the top of the circle into the bottom left corner.
Junior Zoey Atabek got the start and made three saves in the first half without surrendering a goal. Freshman Greta Helvie came in at the start of the second and made just one save to preserve the shutout. Parrish finished with an impressive 15 saves while getting a defensive save from Jane Blicher.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 8 as the Blue Jays travel to Lancaster, PA to take on the seventh-ranked Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. Game time for the Centennial Conference match-up is set for 7:00 pm.
