GETTYSBURG, PA - The Johns Hopkins field hockey team entered Friday afternoon's game needing a win to make the Centennial Conference playoffs. And that is what the Blue Jays got as they beat the host Gettysburg Bullets, 1-0, in both teams' regular season finale. Hopkins improves to 9-8 on the season and finishes the CC slate with a 6-4 record. Gettysburg ends its season with a 4-12 record and a 2-8 mark in the conference.
Both goalies played well to keep their teams in the game and it took until the 52:15-mark before a goal was scored. It came on the stick of freshman Princess Sutherland and as it turned it, it was the game's only goal. Off a corner by senior Danielle Thompson, the ball was deflected by a defender and went right to Sutherland, who buried it in the left corner for her fourth goal of the season.
The Bullets kept fighting and had a great chance to tie the game with just over a minute to play. Samantha Wright intercepted a pass and dribbled all the way to the goal. But junior Zoey Atabek made a diving save to her right to keep the game scoreless. Gettysburg earned a corner but came up empty and Hopkins went home with the win.
Atabek finished with six saves for her third shutout of the season. The Bullets' Haley Mowery made three saves while Emily Van Horn made a defensive save. Gettysburg outshot Hopkins, 12-11, and had one more corner (10-9) than the Jays.
Hopkins will learn its postseason opponent on Saturday as there are still four conference games remaining. Be sure to check out HopkinsSports.com on Monday for more details on the Centennial Conference Tournament.
