BALTIMORE, MD -
Liz Wuerstle tallied 12 kills and
Kristi Rhead dished out 21 assists to lead the Johns Hopkins volleyball team to a 3-0 win over the visiting Gettysburg Bullets.
The first set saw the Jays come from behind to win. Down most of the set, the Jays got back into the set after a timeout when down 10-4. From there the Jays climbed back into the game, before taking the lead 18-17 following back-to-back Wuerstle aces. Following a third ace by the left-handed freshman, the Jays got kills from Ali Cox, Ally Hirsch, Erica Johnston and Mereze Visagie to take a 24-20 lead. After a Blue Jays service error the Bullets served long and out of bounds, giving the Jays a 25-21 win.
The second set was back and forth for much of it, with the Jays getting a bit of breathing room at 16-12 after kills from Hirsch, Johnston, and Visagie and a block from the latter two. After some trading points, the Bullets climbed back to tie the set at 18. From there, consecutive kills by Wuerstle, Rhead and Johnston looked to give the Jays a commanding lead. But Gettysburg tied it at 21 after a block, an ace and a Wuerstle hitting error. With both teams trading service errors the score was tied at 22 before Wuerstle hammered home another kill and Hirsch and Rhead combined for a block to make the score 24-22. After a Jays service error, Hirsch ended the set, with a powerful right-handed kill.
The third set was all Jays from the outset, with the team taking a 14-3 lead with Wuerstle's fingerprints all over it. The Keystone State native had a direct hand in six of the first 14 points. After trading points, and with the Jays up 19-9, Wuerstle and Rhead finished the match, combining for the final six points of the match to give the Jays a 25-10 win.
The Blue Jays are next in action on Wednesday evening as they will host Franklin & Marshall in the first game of the Centennial Conference tournament. The Jays are the four-seed while the Diplomats own the five spot. The Jays won the regular season match in a thrilling five set match.
