ANNAPOLIS, MD - Eighth-ranked and second-seeded Princeton used a seven-goal run over the first and second periods to pull away in an 18-5 win over Johns Hopkins Friday night at the CWPA Championship. The Blue Jays slip to 13-12 on the season while the Tigers improve to 22-3.
Princeton jumped out to a two-goal lead with goals from Thomas Nelson and Drew Hoffenberg before Hopkins got on the board at the 3:06-mark with a goal from freshman Adrian Suarez. The Tigers responded with seven unanswered goals, kick-started by back-to-back goals by Eric Bowen, and the number two seed led 4-1 after the first quarter. Bret Hinrichs capped the run with his goal with 1:39 to play in the second. Freshman Conor Hehir ended the Tigers' run with a man-up goal with just three ticks on the clock.
Princeton picked up where it left off at the half, outscoring Hopkins 7-0 in the third quarter. The Blue Jays got on the board in the fourth with three straight goals from junior Garrett Davidson, freshman Jono Gillette and sophomore Matt Fraser. Princeton answered with a pair of goals to account for the 18-5 final.
Five different Blue Jays scored in the loss and freshman John Wilson finished with 10 saves. Nelson led the Tigers with four goals, while Jordan Collins added a hat trick and Vojislav Mitrovic made eight saves in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action in the consolation bracket on Saturday, November 22. Hopkins will face either Harvard or Navy at 3:15 pm in Lejeune Hall.
