ANNAPOLIS, MD - Senior co-captain Wes Hopkins notched a hat trick to lead Johns Hopkins to a 10-5 win over third-seeded Harvard in the consolation round of the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Championship Saturday afternoon. Hopkins improves to 14-12 on the season and will face division rival Bucknell in the fifth-place match on Sunday. Harvard falls to 21-10 and will play in the seventh-place match tomorrow.

The Blue Jays jumped on top of the Crimson early, scoring the first five goals of the match. Hopkins led 3-0 at the end of the first and led 5-0 by the 2:06-mark of the second. Colin Chiapello finally got Harvard on the board with a man-up goal with 1:34 to go in the period. Dan Stevens then made it two in a row for the Crimson, scoring the first goal of the third just 37 seconds in to make it a 5-2 game.

Hopkins responded with back-to-back goals from Hopkins and junior Langdon Froomer as JHU pushed out to a 7-2 lead. The teams traded five-meter goals by Blake Lee and senior co-captain Johnny Beal and it was 8-3 Blue Jays with 7:02 to go in the game. Lee cut the deficit to four with a man-up goal at 4:45, but back-to-back goals by sophomore Giovanni Cragnotti and junior Garrett Davidson just 45 seconds apart staked Hopkins to a 10-4 lead with 2:09 to play. Dan Stevens got a man-up goal 17 seconds later but that would do it for the scoring.

Hopkins finished with the three goals on four shots while Froomer totaled four points on a goal and three helpers. Junior Kevin Yee scored and drew three ejections and freshman John Wilson made 11 saves, including a pair on five-meter shots.

Hopkins and Bucknell will battle for fifth-place at 1:00 pm in Lejeune Hall on Sunday, November 22.
