PITTSBURGH, PA - Junior Hope Lundberg scored in the 88th minute to tie the game and the Johns Hopkins women's soccer team eventually prevailed, 4-3, in a shootout at sixth-ranked Carnegie Mellon in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Saturday afternoon. The 20th-ranked Blue Jays improve to 18-3-2 on the season while the Tartans see their season end with a 16-2-1 mark.
Carnegie Mellon got on the board early scoring just 10:24 into the game. Tori Iatarola gave the home team the lead when she dribbled to her right, squared her body and fired a shot from 30 yards just past the outstretched hands of junior Sarah Benett for the early score. Hopkins almost drew level in the 34th minute off an Alyssa Morgan header, but it hit the crossbar and ricocheted out to junior Alaina Arthur. Arthur fired a shot on net but Katie Liston pushed it wide to keep the Blue Jays off the board.
The Tartans nearly got an insurance goal in the 81st minute but Megan Bartoshuk's shot hit off the crossbar. With time winding down and Hopkins needing a goal to keep its season alive, the Blue Jays got what they just that with 2:32 to play. Bailey Monaco played a corner kick into the box and it was cleared by Carson Quiros. But the ball went right to Lundberg, who settled at the top of the box before burying a shot in the lower left corner to level the score. That goal eventually forced overtime where neither team was able to get the go-ahead goal and this one would be decided in a shootout.
Freshman Clara Aranguren took over in the net for the Blue Jays in the shootout and she made three saves, including on the Tartans' final shot to send Hopkins to the NCAA Elite Eight. Benett, who played all 110 minutes in goal and made three saves, converted the final penalty kick that gave the Jays a 4-3 advantage.
Hopkins outshot Carnegie Mellon, 9-7, and had a 5-4 advantage in corners. Liston finished with three saves in the game and also made a pair in the shootout. The Blue Jays advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the fifth time in the last six years. Hopkins will face ninth-ranked Thomas More at 1:00 pm on Sunday for the right to move on to Kansas City, MO.
