Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Host and sixth-ranked Ursinus jumped on top of the Johns Hopkins field hockey team early and went on to defeat the Blue Jays, 7-0, in the Centennial Conference semifinals Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays end their season with a 10-9 record while the top-seeded Bears improve to 15-3 and advance to Sunday's title game.

The Bears led 2-0 before the game was four minutes old on pair of goals by Danielle Strong. Her first of the game came off a rebound at the left post just 1:54 into the game. She then doubled the Bears' lead 86 seconds later. Amber Steigerwalt passed across the front of the cage to Strong, who tipped it in from the left side. The Hopkins defense held Ursinus at bay for the next 12 minutes, but the high-scoring offense once again got a pair of quick goals to push out to a four-goal lead. Megan Keenan scored off a give-and-go with Stephanie Cooper from the top-left of the circle at 15:45. Devin Brakel then tipped a long pass from Cooper past junior Zoey Atabek and the Bears led 4-0 at 17:58.

The goals continued to come in bunches as the Bears got a pair less than three minutes apart late in the half. Brakel got her second of the day at 23:25, scoring from the top-left of the circle off a Strong corner. Strong added her third of the day at 26:01, scoring from close range off a rebound to give Ursinus a 6-0 lead at the half. The Bears would get one more, from Brakel less than four minutes into the second half to close out the scoring.

Atabek finished with 14 saves while playing nearly 58 minutes in cage. Freshman Greta Helvie played just over 12 minutes and made a pair of saves. For the Bears Danielle DeSpirito made one save in earning the shutout win. Ursinus outshot Hopkins, 39-6, and had more corners (17-5).
