BALTIMORE, MD - Senior co-captain
Lucy Woodrow scored the game's only goal 19:05 into overtime to lift host Johns Hopkins to a 1-0 win over unbeaten Washington College Saturday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays (4-3) snap a two-game losing streak as they open their conference slate with a win. The Shorewomen suffer their first loss of the season as they see their school-record season-opening win streak snapped at five.
Junior goalie Zoey Atabek was the story of the game for the Blue Jay as she made 13 saves, including several point-blank, in her return to the starting lineup. She made six five saves in the first half and got a defensive save in from junior Leslie MacManus to keep the Shorewomen off the board. Elizabeth Davis fired a shot from the top of the circle that got deflected by Meredith Andrews. The ball went up and over Atabek and looked to be the go-ahead goal, but with her back to the field, MacManus batted the ball out of midair and out of danger at the 20:42-mark.
The Shorewomen continued to press in the second half, but Atabek continued to thwart the attack with eight saves in the second stanza. After battling for 70 minutes, the teams needed overtime to decide a winner. Hopkins had much of the offense, outshooting Washington College, 5-1, in the first overtime period. But it took until the second overtime to get a winner. The game finally ended when Woodrow dribbled in from the left endline and blasted a shot from seven yards out that beat Sadie Robertson at the near post. It was the Blue Jays' first overtime wins since September 1, 2012 and Woodrow's first career overtime goal.
Atabek finished with a season-high 13 saves, three shy of her career high, to earn her first win of the season. Robertson finished with four saves in the loss for the Shorewomen. Washington College had the edge in shots, 19-11, while corners were even at nine apiece.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 24 as the Blue Jays host the second-ranked Salisbury Sea Gulls. The non-conference tilt is slated for a 7:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
