ALLENTOWN, PA - Kayleigh Thies scored a hat trick to lead host Muhlenberg to a 5-2 win over Johns Hopkins in Centennial Conference field hockey action Friday night. The Blue Jays slip to 4-5 on the season, including 1-1 in the CC while the Mules improve to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Christine Germaske gave the home team an early lead, scoring what proved to be the game-winner just over five minutes into the contest. Lauren Jordan passed to Germaske on the post, who tapped it in at 5:01 to give Muhlenberg the early 1-0 lead. Just over 14 minutes later, Thies scored the first of her three goals on the night to push the Mules lead to two. She dribbled into the circle and fired home her first goal at 19:17.
The score stood at 2-0 for nearly 40 minutes before the Mules got a pair of goals in just 54 seconds. Thies scored both for Muhlenberg as the home team turned a two-goal lead into a four-goal lead by the 59:38-mark. Exactly one minute later, Hopkins got on the board. Freshman Morgan Pothast deflected a pass from freshman Clare Kavanagh to end the Mules' shutout bid and make it a 4-1 game. Muhlenberg answered five minutes later as Taylor Smith scored an unassisted tally from close range at 65:44. Junior Shannon Parker closed out the scoring in the final seconds of the game when she put away a loose ball in front of the Mules' cage.
Junior Zoey Atabek finished with five saves in the loss for the Blue Jays, while sophomore Shannon Cosgrove added a defensive save. Sierra Lenker made a pair of saves and got a defensive save from Claudia Theriault to earn the win.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, October 3 as the Blue Jays host the Swarthmore Garnet. Game time for the Centennial Conference match-up is slated for 6:00 pm.
