BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's volleyball team completed the Gio Memorial tournament Saturday, going 1-1 on the day and 2-1 for the weekend. The Jays suffered a tough loss to Stevenson in the morning match, before taking a few hours off prior to thrashing Goucher.
The morning match saw the Jays struggle offensively finishing with a .131 hitting percentage in the three set loss. Hopkins had control of the first set, being up 18-14, before serving errors down the stretch and some ball handling miscues put the opportunity in the Mustangs hands to seize victory, and they did, winning 25-23.
The second set was also back and forth, before the Mustangs pulled away to a 25-20 win. In the third and final set, seven hitting errors combined with five service errors proved to be the Jays undoing, as Stevenson finished the match with a 25-21 win.
Leading the way for Stevenson was Lauren Weaver with seven kills, while setter Sara Bollinger controlled play with 23 assists while adding 16 digs. Senior Samantha Perillo notched 22 digs in the match. For the Jays, freshman Liz Wuerstle hammered home 11 kills, while Ali Cox added nine. Senior Anne Cohen added 18 digs, while setter Carolyn Zin and Kristi Rhead combined for 24 assists.
In the second match of the day for the Jays, it was utter domination from the outset. The Jays started with a 5-0 run, courtesy of three service aces by Ali Cox. Not to be overshadowed by Cox's service brilliance, Wuerstle laid the lefty hammer down, notching four straight serving aces after hammering home a kill from Rhead. After the service run by Wuerstle, the score read 10-2, and the Jays rolled home to a 25-10 win, finishing with 10 kills and nine aces.
The second set was more of the same, as Hopkins rolled to a 25-14 win courtesy of 14 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. The domination continued in the third set, as the team opened with a 6-0 start, en route to a 25-12 win.
For the match, Wuerstle led the way with 10 kills and eight aces to go along with an impressive .529 hitting percentage. Hopkins finished the match with a .403 hitting percentage and a whopping 18 service aces.
