• The Short Story: Fifth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer held off a late rally by the second-ranked Johns Hopkins water polo team to win 10-9 on Thursday night at Haldeman Pool. The loss is the Blue Jays' first this season against a Division III team and just their third overall in 2015.
How it Happened
• Pomona-Pitzer jumped out to a 2-0 lead but a goal from freshman Andreas Katsis made it a 2-1 game at the end of the first quarter.
• Fueled by an electric crowd, the Sagehens scored four unanswered to storm out to a 6-1 lead with 1:58 to play in the second quarter. Phillip Clayman led the way with two of the home team's four goals during the run. Senior co-captain Langdon Froomer ended the run with 55 seconds to go in the quarter.
• Pomona pushed its lead back to four to start the third quarter, but back-to-back goals from freshmen Josh Kurtz and Giorgio Cico made it a 7-4 game with just over five minutes to go. The teams traded goals, including a five-meter goal from Froomer and it was 8-4 heading into the fourth.
• The Sagehens struck first in the fourth, but the Blue Jays answered with three goals in just 98 seconds to make it just a one-goal game with just under three minutes to play. PP answered at 2:15 to take a 10-8 lead, but a Froomer goal with 10 seconds to play trimmed the deficit in half.
What it Means
• Johns Hopkins suffered its first loss this season to a Division III team and first since October 19, 2014.
• Hopkins is now 5-4 all-time against Pomona-Pitzer as the Sagehens snap a three-game losing streak in the series. Four of the last five meetings have been decided by just one goal.
Inside the Box Score
• Freshman Giorgio Cico led the Blue Jays with four points (2g, 2a) while senior co-captain Langdon Froomer tallied a hat trick.
• Sophomore Jono Gillette drew three ejections and freshman Josh Kurtz had a pair of steals.
• Sophomore John Wilson finished with three saves and a steal in the first half. Senior Erik Henrikson made four saves, to go with two steals, in the second half.
