• The Short Story: Top-seeded and 11th-ranked Princeton beat the third-seeded Johns Hopkins water polo team, 16-12, in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Southern Championship match Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays, playing for the championship for just the second time in program history, slip to 19-9 with the loss. The Tigers repeat as the Southern Division champions and win their ninth title overall.
How it Happened
• Princeton jumped out to a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter, but Hopkins answered with three goals in just 74 seconds to take a 3-2 lead with 26 ticks on the clock. Freshman Josh Kurtz sparked the run with his goal at the 1:40-mark and senior co-captain Langdon Froomer tied the game 47 seconds later with the first of his five goals. Junior Matt Fraser then put the Blue Jays ahead but the Tigers answered with eight seconds to play to knot the score at 3-3.
• Froomer struck first in the second quarter, putting Hopkins back on top, but the lead lasted just 18 seconds. Froomer scored again to stake Hopkins to a 5-4 lead but the Tigers came right back, scoring five unanswered to go up 9-5 with 1:55 to play. Fraser ended the run and pulled Hopkins within three at the half with his second of the day.
• The teams traded goals to open the third before the Blue Jays put together a three-goal spurt to make it an 11-10 game with 4:20 to go in the quarter. Fraser sparked the run and senior Blake Range answered with back-to-back goals just 15 seconds apart. The Tigers would have the final say of the quarter, netting a pair to take a 13-10 lead into the fourth.
• Froomer opened the fourth-quarter scoring, but Princeton answered with a pair and the lead was 15-11 with 4:55 to go. Fraser made it a three-goal game with 2:46 to play but that's as close as the Blue Jays would get as the Tigers got one more to seal the win.
