FORT MYERS, FL - The 24th-ranked Johns Hopkins Blue Jays got off to a quick start, thanks to a two-run single by Craig Hoelzer and a three-run homerun by Dan Albert, the first of his career, to take a 5-0 lead that they would never surrender, en route to a 16-5 win over Knox College.
After batting around in the first, Conor Reynolds drove a one out double to left field in the second inning. Colin McCarthy followed with a walk before Hoelzer drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with a double. Hoelzer would advance to third as Knox tried to throw McCarthy out at the plate.
Jake Rogers would drive in Hoelzer with a groundout to the second baseman, and the Jays were in control, 8-0, through two at-bats.
Things got a little murky in the Knox half of the inning, as the Prairie Fires used an error by Reynolds to setup an easy run. After a sac-bunt by Theo Mills put runners on second and third, Michael Bohnhoff stroked as single to the outfield, scoring Ryder Borre from third.
After Drake Sykes struck out, Paul Sanders hit a single that scored another for Knox. Just when it looked like the Jays would get out of the inning, another error kept the Jays on the field and tacked on another run of the Prairie Fires, cutting the Hopkins lead to 8-4 after two.
The third saw the Jays stay off the board, while the Prairie Fires added another run to their tally, bringing the score to 8-5.
Reynolds started the fourth with a single and advanced to second on a wild throw in from the outfield by the left fielder. McCarthy doubled him home, before scoring from second on a passed ball, three batters later.
Taking a 10-5 lead into the sixth, Hopkins exploded for a six run inning. Thomas Mee led off the inning with a double, and McCarthy drove him home with a double of his own. Reynolds moved to third on another passed ball, before Hoelzer and Rogers drew consecutive walks.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, Joe Conlon stepped in and hammered a deep triple to left-center, clearing the bases for his third, fourth and fifth RBI of the season. A David Mampre sac-fly to left drove in Conlon and finished the scoring for the Jays in the inning.
Ed Bryner earned the win for the Jays after throwing two scoreless innings in his third appearance of the season.
The Jays are back in action tomorrow as they will face University of Wisconsin-Stout. Game time is set for Noon.
