Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss in eight weeks, falling 17-9, to top-ranked and undefeated Maryland. The Blue Jays had their nine-game win streak snapped in the loss as they fall to 11-3 on the season. The Terps meanwhile, win their 25th straight game as they improve to 15-0 on the year.

Maryland took a quick two-goal lead, getting goals from Taylor Cummings and Brooke Griffin just 18 seconds apart. Cummings put the Terps on the board at the 29:08-mark, taking a pass from Kelly McPartland in the slot and slipping a shot over the right shoulder of senior KC Emerson. Griffin doubled the visitors' lead when she came around the backside of the goal, caught a pass from Cumming and scored on a low shot. Hopkins cut the deficit in half with 25:48 to play when senior Jen Cook found freshman CeCe Finney curling around the right side of the crease for the score.

The Terps answered with three straight goals to push out to a 5-1 lead by the 18:01-mark of the first half. Cummings got her second of the game when she put home the rebound off an Emerson save at 22:08. Just 38 seconds later, Zoe Stukenberg dodged left to right across the fan and scored on a hard high-to-high shot. McPartland then capped the quick run with a free position goal. Junior Dene' DiMartino answered with a free position goal for the Blue Jays and the lead was 5-2 with 13:45 to play.

Maryland answered right back however as Cummings won the draw and found Griffin open behind the defense for the fast-break goal. DiMartino again answered, scoring on a worm-burner from the top of the fan with 10:01 to play in the half, but back-to-back Griffin goals stake Maryland to an 8-3 lead with 2:38 on the clock. Cook added a goal to her earlier assist as the clock ticked under a minute when freshman Emily Kenul found her open on the back post for the score. But the Terps once again answered, scoring when Stukenberg scored as time expired in the half to send Maryland into the break with a 9-4 lead.

Sophomore Haley Schweizer pulled the Blue Jays within four less than three minutes into the second. DiMartino traded a pass with Schweizer at the top of the fan, she then cut down the alley and bounced a shot past Alex Fitzpatrick. Maryland got the quick answer when Megan Whittle scored on a high-to-low shot off the dodge just 44 seconds later. That goal sparked another Terp three-goal run as they pushed out to a 12-5 lead. Junior Kristen Cannon cut the deficit in half when she dodged from behind the cage, turned and fired home her 21st of the season at 15:57.

Just 10 seconds later, however, Cummings scored on the run in the right alley to make it a 13-6 game. Schweizer and freshman Shannon Fitzgerald sandwiched goals around a strike from Stukenberg and the Terps led 14-8 with 11:13 to play. Whittle then jump-started another three-goal spurt for Maryland as the defending national champions took a 17-8 lead by the 3:46-mark. Finney capped the scoring with a shot off a rebound just over a minute later.

DiMartino led the Blue Jays with three points (2g, 1a) while also controlling three draws. Schweizer and Finney also finished with two goals each while Emerson made four saves in the loss. Sophomore Caroline Federico came in at the 35:55-mark and finished with three saves. Cummings had a game-high six points (4g, 2a) and 11 draws, while Griffin had a game-high five goals. Fitzpatrick made four saves in the win. The Blue Jays' nine goals are the third most the Terps have given up this season.

Hopkins is back in action on Wednesday, April 22 as the Blue Jays will host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Hopkins will honor its three seniors prior to the game, which is slated for a 6:00 pm start.
