? The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team go goals from 12 different players and reached the 20-goal mark for the second time this season in a 20-9 win over Mercyhurst Sunday afternoon. The Blue Jays won three of their four matches at the Bison Invitational and are now 6-1 on the season.
How it Happened
? After falling behind early, 2-1, Johns Hopkins scored six straight goals in a run that bridged the quarter break. Freshman Giorgio Cico book-ended the run with the first and six goals that saw Hopkins build a 6-2 lead by the 7:14-mark in the second quarter.
? The teams traded goals for the remainder of the second and the Blue Jays went into the break with a 10-5 lead. Freshman Josh Kurtz capped the second-quarter scoring as he found the back of the cage with just one tick on the clock.
? Leading 11-6 with just a minute gone in the third quarter, freshman Andreas Katsis scored to ignite another six-goal Blue Jay run. Six different players scored during the run, which was capped by a Connor Johnson goal that gave Hopkins a 17-6 lead.
? The Lakers scored three of the next four goals as they trimmed the deficit to nine. The Blue Jays weren't done however, as they would score two more in just a 16-second span to close out the scoring.
What it Means
? Johns Hopkins is now 8-3 all-time against Mercyhurst and has won the last three meetings.
? The 11-goal margin of victory is the largest in the series history.
Inside the Box Score
? Senior Langdon Froomer tallied six points on the day to eclipse 200 for his career. He is the eighth player in program history to reach the mark.
? Freshman Giorgio Cico totaled six assists and 10 points in the match, both are tied for the third most in a match in school history. Cico also had four steals, while Froomer and senior Garrett Davidson had three each.
? Froomer along with classmates Kevin Yee and Blake Range, junior Matt Fraser and sophomore Jono Gillette scored two goals apiece.
? Freshman Andreas Katsis and junior Matt Fraser each drew four ejections.
? Sophomore John Wilson made seven saves in three quarters, while freshman Spencer Witte stopped three shots in the fourth.
