BALTIMORE, MD - For the third consecutive season, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated Washington College in its Centennial Conference opener. The Blue Jays defeated the Shorewomen (6-3) in four sets (25-19, 25-20, 19-25, 25-19) to even their record at 5-5.
How it Happened:
- Hopkins led throughout the entire first set, jumping out to leads of 9-5, 15-10 and 24-15 before ultimately winning the set 25-19 on a kill from Elizabeth Wuerstle off of a feed from Carolyn Zin.
- The second set was tied at 13 apiece and the teams went back and forth until Hopkins was able to take a 22-18 advantage. The Blue Jays rattled off three of the final four points in the set to win it 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
- The Shorewomen scored the first four points of the third set, only to see JHU come back and tie it at four. Washington eventually led 15-9 and the Blue Jays were never able to catch them, ultimately falling 25-19 in the third set.
- In the fourth set, Hopkins was down 13-12, but scored seven straight to take an advantage it would never relinquish. The Blue Jays clinched the set, and the match, when a Washington player was called for a ball handling error.
Inside the Box Score:
- Wuerstle led JHU with a match-high 19 kills and also had six digs and four service aces.
- Zin had a team-best 21 assists for Hopkins. Taylor Horan had 26 for Washington to lead all players.
- Stephanie Yokoyama finished with a match-best 24 digs to go along with four service aces.
- Sasha Gorelik led the Blue Jays with four total blocks.
- Hopkins hit .174 in the contest, while Washington hit .128.
Next Up:
JHU hits the road again this weekend for a pair of Saturday matches at Stevenson. The Blue Jays will take on the host Mustangs at 11:00 am, before squaring off with Mary Washington at 1:00 pm.
