CARLISLE, PA – Host Dickinson got a combined 43 points from Ted Hinnenkamp and Brandon Angradi in 71-62 win over the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays slip to 8-8 on the season and 5-4 in the conference, while the Red Devils win their second straight to improve to 6-10 overall and 5-4 in the CC. Senior Sam Gordon led the Blue Jays with 15 points and a career-best 14 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.
Trailing 56-44 with 9:13 to play in the game, a pair of free throws from senior Matt Billups sparked a 14-4 run that saw the Blue Jays slice the deficit to just two. Billups did much of the damage during the run, accounting for 10 of Hopkins' 14 points. Dickinson pushed its lead back to five with an old-fashioned three-point play from Angradi, but Gordon answered with two from the stripe to make it 63-60 with 3:39 on the clock. That's as close as the Blue Jays could get, as the Red Devils outscored them 8-3 down the stretch to secure the win.
Hopkins started out strong, jumping out to a 12-3 lead just 5:22 into the first. Senior Gene Williams put the Blue Jays up nine with a pull-up three-pointer at the top of the key. Elijah Wright and Hinnenkamp got the Red Devils back into it by combining for 12 unanswered points to put Dickinson on top 15-12. Senior Niko Kotoulas ended the Blue Jays' scoring drought with a bucket in the paint at 9:37, but a three-point play from Mike Hinckley pushed the home team's lead to 18-14.
Junior Nikhil Panu sandwiched back-to-back triples around a Hinckley layup and the score was knotted at 20-all with 8:08 to go. Jule Brown put Dickinson back on top with a jumper, but a three-pointer from sophomore Jesse Flannery swung the lead in Hopkins' favor. The lead was short-lived however as the Red Devils closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 35-25 lead in the lockerroom.
Dickinson twice pushed its lead to 14 points in the in the opening 4:20 of the half, but Hopkins kept chipping away. The Blue Jays pulled within eight thanks to four straight points from junior Ryan Curran and a Billups layup. But the Red Devils answered, pushing out to a 52-40 lead with 10:38 to go. Curran and freshman Michael Gardner hit back-to-back buckets to trim the deficit to eight. Once again, Dickinson responded and pressed its lead back to 12, 56-44, at the 9:13-mark.
Gordon finished with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, leading three Blue Jays in double figures. Billups scored 13 points and grabbed seven boards, while Curran chipped in 10 points. Hinnenkamp scored a game-high 22 points, 17 of those coming in the first half, and pulled 13 rebounds. Angradi finished with 21 points, including the 1000th of his career.
Hopkins is scheduled to host Haverford on Saturday, January 23 in CC action. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 1:00 pm.
