BALTIMORE, MD -- Visiting Washington College outscored the Johns Hopkins men's basketball team 24-10 in the final six and a half minutes to beat the Blue Jays, 86-80, Wednesday night. Hopkins falls to 8-9 on the season, including 5-5 in the Centennial Conference. The Shoremen snapped an eight-game losing streak to improve to 3-14 overall and 1-9 in the conference.

Tas Dixon hit a bucket in the paint at 6:26 to spark a 9-1 run that saw the Shoremen tie the game on a Brandon Berry layup with 4:14 to play. Junior Ryan Curran put the Blue Jays back on top with a layup, but a three-point play on the other end by Dixon gave Washington College a 74-73 lead. On the ensuing possession, senior Gene Williams hit one of two free throws and the score was even for the fifth time. Berry answered on the other end however, putting Washington College on top, for good as it turned out, with a layup.

A three-point play by James Drury staked the Shoremen to a five-point lead, but Curran turned the same trick on the other end to make it a 79-77 game with 1:55 to play. After trading empty possessions, the Blue Jays were forced to foul and the visitors went 5-of-6 from the line to seal the win for the Shoremen.

The Blue Jays jumped out to a four-point lead, but the Shoremen put together a 16-2 run to push out to a 10- point lead by the 14:53-mark. Kevin McCormick fueled the run with three straight three-pointers and Clay Smith capped the run with a bucket from downtown. Hopkins trimmed the deficit to nine, but Washington College answered with a 9-2 burst to go up 27-11 with 11:12 to play.

Freshman Michael Gardner got two points off the glass at the 9:15-mark to ignite a 17-4 run that saw the Blue Jays trim the deficit to just three points. Senior Niko Kotoulas did much of the damage during the run, accounting for nine of Hopkins' 17 points. Dixon pushed the lead back to five with 4:15 to play, but six unanswered points, capped by a Williams' triple gave Hopkins a 34-33 lead. It didn't last long as McCormick answered with a three of his own to swing the lead back in WC's favor.

Williams followed with a pair of free throws and a fast-break layup to stake Hopkins to a 38-36 lead with 1:42 on the clock. Berry tied the game with a pair of shots from the free throw line, but a Jesse Flannery three and a Williams' jumper put Hopkins up 43-38 at the half. The Blue Jays maintained their lead through the first 16 minutes of the second half, but could never extend the lead to double digits.

Williams led five Blue Jays in double figures with 24 points, his third 20-point game of the season. This was the first time that five Hopkins' player scored in double digits since December 6, 2014. Curran had his second double-double, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds while also handing out four assists. Kotoulas finished with 12 points and seven rebounds and senior Matt Billups chipped in 10 and seven, respectively. Senior Sam Gordon also added 10 points on the night. Drury led all scorers with 26 points, while Dixon scored 17 and dished seven helpers. McCormick went 5-fo-12 from three and finished with 15 points and Smith added 14 points.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 30 as the Blue Jays travel to the Main Line to take on the Swarthmore Garnet. Tipoff at Tarble Pavilion is slated for 3:00 pm.
