Andrew Greenhalgh won the 1000 Free and placed second in the 500 Free.
EWING, NJ -- The Johns Hopkins men's swim team dropped decisions to West Chester (175-116) and host TCNJ (163.5-124.5) in the Blue Jays' first meet of 2016. Juniors Andrew Greenhalgh and Evan Holder and sophomore Kyle Otazu each won an event for the Blue Jays. Hopkins is now 3-2-1 in dual meets this season.
Hopkins opened the day with a third-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay. Sophomore Jan Hagemeister, Holder, freshman Michael Wohl and sophomore Michael Ashmead finished the relay in 1:36.41. The Blue Jays then swept the top two spots in the 1000 Free, led by Greenhalgh, who clocked in with a time of 9:36.23. Freshman Erik Bostrom followed in second place with a time of 9:45.85.
Holder then took second place in the 200 Free as he finished in 1:43.43, while freshman John Chu touched in 1:44.37 for fourth place. Freshman Emile Kuyl followed with a third-place finish in the 100 Back in 54.10. Freshman Peter Lazorchak also grabbed third place, in the 100 Breast, with a time of 1:00.02. Otazu won his first event of the day, beating the field in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:57.22. Bostrom followed in fourth place as he finished in 1:59.70.
Ashmead then placed third in the 50 Free in 22.08 while sophomore Austin Wilson took sixth in 22.25. In the 100 Free, Chu finished in third place in 48.25, beating Ashmead by just two-hundredths of a second. Sophomore Andrew Gibson placed fourth in the 200 Back (2:00.20) while Hagemeister placed sixth (2:01.99). Junior Scott Sterrett clocked in at 2:12.70 to place fourth in the 200 Breast and Lazorchak took sixth in 2:14.95.
Hopkins then took second through fourth in the 500 Free. Greenhalgh led the way with a second-place finish and a time of 4:40.90 while Otazu finished in 4:45.24 and Bostrom in 4:48.15. Freshman Darren Loh finished fourth in the 100 Fly in 53.58 and Wohl followed in fifth in 54.04. Holder then won the 400 IM, touched first in the 400 IM, clocking in at 4:07.26. Kuyl finished in fifth place as he touched in 4:19.61. The Blue Jays wrapped up the day with third and fourth-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Ashmead, sophomore Luke Johnson, Otazu and Wohl combined for a time of 3:12.40 to take third place. Chu, senior Alex Lambert, Wilson and junior Patrick Flynn took fourth with a time of 3:15.88.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 16 as the Blue Jays host the Stevens Tech Ducks. The meet is slated for a 1:00 pm start at the Newton White Athletic Center.
