• Records: JHU (5-18) • GWU (15-10)
• Location: Lewisburg, PA • Kinney Natatorium • The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins fell just short of making its second-straight appearance in the conference championship game with a 12-10 loss to 18th-ranked George Washington Saturday night. Sophomores Josh Kurtz and Ryan Masi led the Blue Jays with two goals apiece.
How it Happened
• Johns Hopkins took a quick 2-1 lead with goals from Kurtz and freshman Finn Banks. But a goal by Andrew Mavis at the 3:20-mark sparked a six-goal GW run that bridged the quarter break and gave the Colonials a 7-2 lead. Masi scored with nine ticks on the clock to make it a four-goal game at the half.
• Atakan Destici opened the third-quarter scoring with his fourth goal of the game to push George Washington's lead to five. Hopkins answered with back-to-back goals from seniors Matt Fraser and Giovanni Cragnotti to make it an 8-5 game with 4:42 to go in the quarter. The Colonials answered with two goals of their own to push out to a five-goal lead at the end of three.
• GW picked up where it left off with a Pierce Deamer goal that swelled the lead to six just 53 seconds into the fourth. Kurtz responded with his second goal of the night, igniting a 5-1 Hopkins' run that saw the lead trimmed to two. That's as close as the Blue Jays could get however as the Colonials held on for the win.
