BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team shot 57.1 percent from the field in an 81-60 win over visiting Haverford Tuesday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 12-11 overall and 9-7 in the conference, while the Fords slip to 4-19 overall and 2-14 in the CC. Junior Ryan Curran led the Blue Jays with his second straight double-double, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Hopkins pushed out to a 10-4 lead just 3:24 into the contest, capped by a three-point play by Curran. Haverford battled back with an 11-4 run to take a 15-14 lead at the 13:31-mark. Joe Scibelli fueled the run with six of the Fords' 11 points. The lead didn't last long for the visitors as a Gene Williams' pull-up jumper put Hopkins on top, 16-14. Senior Niko Kotoulas made it a three-point game with a pair of free throws, before Scibelli cut it back to one with a bucket on the other end.
The Blue Jays methodically built their lead to 10 points, going up 35-25, with 4:52 to play in the half. Senior Sam Gordon and sophomore Kyle Doran capped the burst with back-to-back three-pointers. The Fords chipped away at the deficit, trimming it to five with a three-point play by Sam Stogdon and a pair of free throws from Scibelli. The teams traded buckets over the remainder of the half and a Jesse Flannery three-pointer gave Hopkins a 42-34 lead at the break.
The Blue Jays pushed their lead to double digits with a bucket from Curran to open the second but Khalil Garnes answered with a layup on the other end. Hopkins came right back with five straight points, taking a 13-point lead with 17:04 to play. The teams went back-and-forth and Hopkins led 56-42 on a Williams' triple. Haverford wasn't going away however, scoring six unanswered points, to slice the deficit to eight points. The teams once again traded buckets and Hopkins led 60-52 with 10:01 on the clock. The Blue Jays would outscore the Fords, 21-8, over the remainder of the game.
Curran posted his fourth double-double of the season, to go along with two assists and two blocks. Gordon and Williams also finished in double figures, scoring 13 points each. Flannery dished a career-high eight assists while senior Matt Billups scored nine points and blocked three shots. Stogdon scored a game-high 19 points while Scibelli finished with a double-double (17 points, 13 rebounds). Garnes chipped in 10 points and handed out five assists.
Hopkins is back in action in less than 24 hours as the Blue Jays host the Dickinson Red Devils. Tip-off at Goldfarb Gym is slated for 8:00 pm on Wednesday.
