The Basics
• Score: #8 Penn State-11, #18 Johns Hopkins-7
• Records: JHU (3-2), PSU (3-1)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: Eighth-ranked Penn State built a 9-1 lead before holding off a late charge from the host Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to win 11-7 Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays, facing their second straight ranked opponent, slip to 3-2 on the season while the Nittany Lions improve to 3-1. Sophomore Emily Kenul led the Blue Jays with three points (2g, 1a).
How it Happened
• Steph Lazo put Penn State on the board first, converting a free position shot at the 19:56-mark. A little over four minutes later, junior Haley Schweizer evened the score when she weaved through the defense and then went high-to-low on Emi Smith.
• The Nittany Lions answered with eight straight goals in a run that spanned more than 31 minutes. Madison Cyr accounted for four of the goals for the Lions, all coming in the second half, as PSU led 9-1 with 8:11 to play.
• The Blue Jays weren't going away however, scoring seven of the last nine goals to pull within four. Sophomore Emily Kenul ended the run with a free position goal, the first of her two on the day, at the 7:40-mark. The goal ended a scoreless drought of 38:02 for Hopkins. Forty-seven seconds later, Madison Carter scored off a goal line extended feed from Delaney Muldoon to make it 10-2. Hopkins responded with goals from senior Jenna Reifler and junior Alexis Maffucci just 17 seconds apart. Reifler took a feed from senior Dene' DiMartino and scored from close range at 6:38. Kenul then drew a free position shot, and instead passed to Maffucci, who was open on the left post for the quick score.
• Muldoon got one back for Penn State as she dodged from goal line extended and then beat junior Caroline Federico low at 2:04.
• Hopkins wasn't done yet however, scoring three goals in 28 seconds to pull within four with 45.2 seconds to go. Kenul and sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald scored back-to-back free position goals before DiMartino scored on a lefty shot off a failed Penn State clear.
What it Means
• Senior Dene' DiMartino extended her point and goal-scoring streak to 39 and 31 games, respectively. Sophomore Emily Kenul also extended her point streak to 23 games.
• Junior Maddie Bodden finished with a game-high five caused turnovers, the most by a Blue Jay since Lacey-Leigh Hentz had five at George Mason in 2003. Her five caused turnovers are also just one shy of the school record.
