• The Short Story: The 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team led 6-3 at the half but top-ranked Maryland rallied in the second half to win 10-8 in College Park Wednesday night. Senior Dene' DiMartino scored a game-high five goals to lead the Blue Jays.
How it Happened
• Johns Hopkins took the early lead when senior Jenna Reifler took a pass from junior Haley Schweizer and beat Megan Taylor with a bouncer from the middle of the fan at 23:06. Maryland answered when Megan Whittle dodged the right alley and fired a shot inside the far post just 54 seconds later.
• The Blue Jays answered with back-to-back goals from senior Dene' DiMartino in a three-minute span. With 19:44 on the clock, she picked the far post from the left alley to stake Hopkins to a 2-1 lead. She then dodged from right goal line extended and slipped a shot past Taylor from the doorstep.
• After being held off the board for nearly seven minutes, the Terps got two straight goals to tie the game at 3-3 with 12:36 to play in the half. Zoe Stukenberg passed over the top of the cage to Caroline Wannen, who scored on the one-timer at 15:41. Whittle then scored on a bouncer from in tight in the left alley to knot the score.
• Hopkins came right back with a three-goal run to take a 6-3 lead into the half. Junior Haley Schweizer kick-started the run when she scored on a rocket of a shot from the right alley at the 8:00-mark. Junior Alexis Maffucci then took a pass from Reifler, turned and scored from the slot to push the lead to two. DiMartino capped the run and her hat trick with a free position goal with just 19 ticks on the clock.
• Taylor Hensh got the Terps on the board first in the second half, converting a free position shot at 24:06. The goal ended a scoreless drought of 18:30 for the nation's second-ranked offense. Just 98 seconds later, DiMartino spun on a double team and blew a shot top shelf from eight yards out to put Hopkins on top 7-4.
• The Terps answered with three straight goals, including a pair from Stukenberg, to tie the game at 7-7 with 17:12 to go. DiMartino ended the run with a free position goal, her second of the night, to put the Blue Jays back on top at the 13:21-mark.
• Maryland tied the game for the fourth time when Kacie Longo cashed in on a free position shot at 12:33. Just 68 seconds later, the Terps had their first lead of the game when Caroline Steele passed on a free position shot and instead found Hensh open on the left post for the score. Taylor Cummings closed out the scoring with her only goal of the game with 2:59 to play. The Terps won the ensuing draw and were able to run out the remainder of the game.
What it Means
• Tonight's game was the final non-conference match-up between the Blue Jays and the Terps, as Hopkins will join the Big Ten next season.
• The 10 goals scored by Maryland was its second lowest output of the season and the two-goal margin was the closest since an 8-7 win at North Carolina on February 27. Maryland came into the game averaging 18.17 goals per game at home and the 10 goals were the fewest it has scored at home since a 10-7 win over Syracuse on March 7, 2015. The Blue Jays held the Terps nearly six goals below their season average while holding Taylor Cummings, the two-time Tewaaraton Award winner, to just two points - half of her per game average.
• Senior Dene' DiMartino tied her career high with five goals and notched her 32nd career hat trick. She also extended her point streak to 48 games and her goal streak to 40. DiMartino now ranks sixth in school Division I history with 187 career points.
• Senior Jenna Reifler is now tied for 13th in school DI history with 36 career assists and she has had at least one point in 14 straight games.
