• The Short Story: Host and top-seeded Maryland jumped out to an 8-3 halftime lead and went on to win 14-8 over 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Championship. Sophomore Emily Kenul scored a game-high four goals to pace the Blue Jays, while senior Dene' DiMartino had a game-high five draws.
How it Happened
• Hopkins got on the board first, despite playing a man down. Following a Caroline Federico interception, senior Dene' DiMartino cashed in on a free position just 1:29 in to stake the Jays to an early 1-0 lead.
• Maryland answered with four goals in just over 10 minutes to go up 4-1 by the 16:29-mark. Megan Whittle and Bryn Boucher scored back-to-back goals just 60 seconds apart to spark the run and give the Terps the lead. Whittle got her second of the day on a free position goal at 21:59 and five-and-a-half minutes later, Jen Giles scored from the doorstep and the lead was three.
• Sophomore Emily Kenul snapped the Terps' run with back-to-back goals in less than two minutes to make it a one-goal game. She dodged the top of the fan and went in all alone on the cage, beating Megan Taylor top-shelf at 16:29. She then snagged a loose ball at the top of the fan and blew a shot past Taylor from six yards out to make it 4-3.
• Maryland answered with a six-goal run that spanned more than 13 minutes, bridged halftime and pushed its lead to 10-3. Cummings got things going with a free position goal at 11:11, followed by consecutive goals from Whittle and it was 7-3 Terps. Giles had the final say of the half, scoring on free position at 6:09. Cummings and Boucher opened the second-half scoring with goals in the first 2:01 of the half.
• Hopkins trimmed the deficit in half with goals just 89 seconds apart from senior Jenna Reifler and DiMartino. Senior Kristen Cannon slipped a pass from behind the cage to Reifler, who beat Taylor from in tight at 27:22. DiMartino then took a pass from sophomore Shannon Fitzgerald, dodged past her defender and scored from the doorstep. Freshman Nicole DeMase made it three in a row for the Jays at 17:33, cutting inside her defender, tiptoeing along the crease and going low on Taylor.
• The Terps ended the Jays' run and a scoring drought of more than 12-and-a-half minutes when Taylor Hensh took a pass from Giles and scored from the left alley. Just a minute later, the lead was back to six on a Cummings' goal.
• Kenul answered with two more goals to make it a 12-8 game with 5:31 on the clock. Following a Maryland turnover, Hopkins went the other way in transition and Fitzgerald found Kenul wide open on the right post for the fast-break goal. Just over two minutes later, she took a flip pass from DiMartino, cut back to her left and blew a shot top shelf while falling to the ground at the top of the fan. Maryland closed the scoring with free position goals, the fifth and sixth of the day for the Terps, to account for the 14-8 final.
