The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins volleyball team fell to Montclair State 3-0 before posting a 3-0 victory of its own over Penn State Altoona in the first day of competition at the Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg, PA.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays fell in their second match of the season to Montclair State. The Red Hawks came out strong for a 25-13 victory in the first set, setting the pace for the rest of the match. JHU dropped the following two sets 25-18 and 25-15.
• Johns Hopkins served up a sweep of its own against Penn State Altoona. The Blue Jays earned a decisive victory, winning the sets 25-18, 25-15 and 25-18.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins picked up its first sweep of the season against Penn State Altoona. Last season, the Blue Jays produced four sweeps, with this victory marking the 22nd three-set win under head coach Tim Cole.

Coach's Corner
• "We are trying not to be dictated by the scoreboard, and today we had two dramatically different matches. We were tight early in the day against a very physical and well-coached Montclair State team, then turned around and played loose and free against PSU Altoona. I bet we will show two more 'new' sides of ourselves tomorrow as we try to build our identity. Genevieve Thomas was strong all day long, and Elizabeth Wuerstle is starting to find her serve. Tomorrow is a good opportunity for us to be a little bit more 'go for it' and a lot less 'wait and see.'"

Player's Take
• Sophomore Sasha Gorelik: "We found a better balance between a firey playing style and a calm consistency. We still have work to do."
• Junior Kristi Rhead: "We made progress today, both in getting our middles more involved and the aggressive play of our defenders."

Up Next
• Johns Hopkins is back in action tomorrow for day two of the Battlefield Classic in Gettysburg, PA. JHU will take on Carnegie Mellon and Salisbury in its remaining matches.
• The Blue Jays open their home season September 21 against Haverford for their first Centennial Conference contest of the year.
