? The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team split a pair of Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference matches on Saturday, beating Wagner before falling to Fordham. Hopkins topped Wagner, 18-10, in the morning and was then edged by Fordham, 8-7, in the afternoon.
How it Happened ? Wagner
? This was a close one early as the teams traded goals throughout the first eight minutes. Hopkins struck first with a 6-on-5 goal from sophomore Giorgio Cico just 41 seconds in. The Seahawks answered two minutes later to tie the match, but sophomore Josh Kurtz put the Jays back on top with 2:27 to play with another man-up goal. The lead was short-lived as Wagner tied it with 1:05 to play in the quarter, but a Cico goal with eight ticks on the clock put JHU up 3-2 at the break.
? Sophomore Andreas Katsis opened the second quarter scoring just 21 seconds in to push the lead to 4-2. Wagner answered once again and the teams swapped goals over the ensuing seven minutes. Leading by one with just 10 seconds to play in the half, Kurtz got his second of the game to put Hopkins up 7-5 at the half.
? The Seahawks came out firing to start the third quarter, scoring back-to-back goals to tie the game with 6:29 on the clock. The Blue Jays responded with six straight goals in a run that bridged the quarter break and saw them go up 13-7. Wagner ended the run at the 5:10-mark in the fourth but JHU came right back with a pair of goals from freshman Carter Young and Cico to stake Hopkins to a 16-8. The teams closed out the final 3:21 by trading goals as Hopkins took the 18-10 win.
How it Happened ? Fordham
? This had the makings off a defensive struggle early as the Rams held a two-goal lead with 2:40 to play in the opening quarter. Sophomore Giorgio Cico converted a five-meter shot at 1:56 to cut the deficit in half. Fordham pushed the lead back to two with a goal from Ian Watson with 33 seconds left. Sophomore Andreas Katsis scored on 6-on-5 with just eight ticks remaining to slice the deficit to one.
? Fordham struck first to open the second quarter, but it was answered by goals from sophomore Josh Kurtz and freshman Finn Banks to send the teams into the half tied at 4.
? Jake Miller-Tolt opened the third-quarter scoring to give the Rams a 5-4 lead just 32 seconds in. Just 25 seconds later however, the game was tied on a Matt Fraser goal. Fordham responded 20 seconds later to the lead back, for good it turned out. The Rams doubled their lead with 2:29 to play but Katsis answered to make it 7-6 Fordham at the end of three.
? Fordham pushed their lead to 8-6 with 3:10 to play on a Watson goal. Hopkins would trim the deficit back to one on a Cico goal with 2:25 to go, but as it turned out that would do it for the scoring.
