• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team fell at Haverford, 61-54, Saturday as the Fords hit 10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory. Lillian Scott led the Blue Jays with 13 points, while Elle Hepburn and Marissa Varnado each added nine points off the bench.
How it Happened
• The Blue Jays started slow against the Fords, while Haverford gained a 6-0 lead to begin the game. Lexie Scholtz kicked off the scoring for Hopkins, cutting the Fords' lead in half as she hit a three-pointer with 5:26 to play in the opening quarter. The Blue Jays pieced together three layups in less than a minute to cut the deficit to 13-9 before Haverford outscored Hopkins 5-2 in the final 1:49 for the 18-11 lead after one quarter.
• Once again, the Fords used a quick start to extend their lead over the Blue Jays. Haverford scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to earn a 29-11 lead with 5:35 remaining in the first half. Elle Hepburn stopped the bleeding for the Blue Jays with a three-pointer. Hopkins rallied to score the final eight points, including four points from Lillian Scott, of the second quarter, cutting Haverford's lead to 33-25 at halftime.
• The Blue Jays came firing out of halftime, outscoring Haverford 6-0 in the first 2:41 to cut the Fords' lead to 33-31. Caroline Corcoran drained a three-pointer with 6:41 remaining in the third quarter to tie the score, 34-34, the first of five ties in the quarter. Hopkins gained the lead for the first time off a layup by Hepburn with 3:40 to play in the third period. The Blue Jays outscored Haverford 7-6 after gaining the lead for the 45-42 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
• The teams played a back-and-forth fourth quarter, trading the lead five times before the Blue Jays tied the score 51-51 with 3:25 remaining in the game off a jump shot by Scholtz. The Fords hit 10-of-10 from the free-throw line down the stretch to seal the victory, 61-54.
• Scott led the Blue Jays with 13 points, dished two assists and pulled down four rebounds in the loss. Scholtz handed out eight assists, while Rory Cole added three assists and grabbed nine rebounds.
