• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team closed the game on a 15-3 run and got the game-winner from sophomore Michael Gardner in a 74-71 win over Ursinus in the 16th annual Wall-O'Mahony game Saturday afternoon. Junior Kyle Doran was named the Blue Jays' Wall-O'Mahony MVP after scoring a game-high 18 points.
How it Happened
• Eric Williams and Zach Quattro sandwiched threes around one from Doran in the game's opening 59 seconds and the Bears' led 6-3. A Remi Janicot bucket in the paint pushed their lead to five before a three-point play from Doran sliced the deficit to one with 18:07 on the clock.
• Ursinus answered with an 8-2 run to take a 16-8 lead two and a half minutes later. The teams traded buckets before back-to-back baskets from Joseph LoStracco and Zack Muredda put the Bears up 22-13. Hopkins then got layups from seniors Nikhil Panu and Ryan Curran to make it a five-point game with 12:03 to go. Quattro came right back with a three-pointer, followed by a pair of Shane Stark free throws and just like that Ursinus led 27-17.
• Junior Jesse Flannery drained a three-pointer to spark a 11-2 run that pulled the Blue Jays within one at the 5:51-mark. Panu capped the run with a triple and a jumper to make it 29-28.
• Ursinus answered with an 11-2 run of its own, fueled by a trio of three-pointers to push out to a 40-30 lead with 3:53 to go. The teams again swapped buckets and the Bears took a 51-40 lead into the half.
• Hopkins came out firing to start the second half and used a 15-4 run to tie the game at 55-all with 11:34 to play. Doran scored the first six points of the half and then put the punctuation on the run with a three-pointer to tie the game.
• Brian Rafferty hit one of two free throws to put the Bears back on top and they methodically built their lead back to nine with 4:25 to play. Five different players scored during the span as Ursinus took a 68-59 lead.
• Gardner hit a jumper with 3:32 to play that sparked the deciding 15-3 run for the Blue Jays. Gordon was fouled on the possession and made one of two free throws to make it a six-point game. Hopkins then forced Ursinus into three straight turnovers, which the Jays turned into seven points. Gordon put Hopkins up 69-68, its first lead of the game, with 2:00 to go.
• Rafferty answered on the other end with a three-point play to swing the lead back to the Bears' favor at the 1:11-mark. Graduate student Austin Vasiliadis came up big for the Blue Jays on the subsequent possession, drawing a foul and then sinking both free throws to tie the game.
• Gardner blocked Remi Janicot's jumper on the other end and sophomore Daniel Vila grabbed the board. On the ensuing possession, Vasiliadis' jumper missed the mark, but Gordon corralled the rebound in traffic and kicked the ball out to Gardner. Gardner crossed over his defender and drained a pull-up jumper to put Hopkins up 74-71 with 2.8 seconds remaining. Off the inbounds, Williams' half-court shot hit the rim at the buzzer.
