Johns Hopkins Tops Washington & Lee in Shootout

Box Score Sept. 1, 2017

Box Score

The Basics
• Score: Johns Hopkins-2, Washington & Lee-1 (PS)
• Records: JHU (1-0) • WL (0-1)
• Location: Lexington, VA • W&L Turf Field
• The Short Story: Senior Clare Kavanagh converted her penalty stroke in the sudden-death portion of the shootout to lift the visiting Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 2-1 win over Washington & Lee on a rain-soaked evening.

How it Happened
• The Generals struck first when Lauren Paolano took a pass on the near side from Grace Bowen and scored on a shot across the goal at 23:05.
• The Blue Jays answered just over five minutes later to tie the game at 1-1. Freshman Seema Sajjan sent a long ball across the circle to senior Morgan Pothast, who redirected it past W&L goalie Ariyel Yavalar.
• Junior Grace Hillman kept the game at a tie score at 50:25 when she stopped a shot by Olivia Hewitt that had slipped past sophomore goalie Jodie Baris.
• The teams battled through the second half and two 15-minute overtimes before heading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner. And even then, it took six rounds of penalty strokes to get a winner. After Haley Tucker missed on her attempt, senior Clare Kavanagh beat Yavalar to give the Blue Jays the win.

What it Means
• Today's win marks the first for head coach Jane Wells, who is in her first season with the Blue Jays and 11th overall.
• Hopkins is now 12-1 all-time against Washington & Lee, including 4-0 in overtime. This is the Blue Jays first win over the Generals in Lexington since 2013.
• Hopkins improves to 37-21-28 in overtime contests and 7-2 in shootouts. This is Hopkins first shootout win since a 2-1 win over Gettysburg on September 19, 2009.

• Senior Morgan Pothast scored her 21st career goal, which moves her into a tie for 15th in program history.
