Volleyball Defeats Swarthmore and Vassar in Saturday Action

JHU is now 17-3 on the year

SWARTHMORE MATCH
The Basics
 
• Score: #25 JHU – 3, Swarthmore – 1 (20-25, 25-22, 29-27, 26-24)
• Records: Hopkins (16-3, 7-1 CC) • Swarthmore (12-5, 5-2 CC)
• Location: Swarthmore, PA • Tarble Pavilion
• The Short Story: After dropping the first set, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team rallied to win the next three and defeat rival Swarthmore, 3-1 on the road on Saturday morning.

How it Happened

SET 1
•
With the match tied at 11, the Garnet scored five of the next six points to take a 15-12 lead.
• The Blue Jays pulled to within two on a kill from Simone Bliss which made the score 21-19 but Swarthmore scored four of the set's last five points to take a 25-20 victory.

SET 2
•
A 6-0 Johns Hopkins run gave the visitors' a 9-4 advantage but the Garnet scored four of the next five points to make the score 10-7.
• Hopkins scored four-straight points to take a 23-16 lead on a service ace from Nicole Hada, and a Swarthmore service error gave the Blue Jays match point.
• The Garnet then scored four consecutive points to make the score 24-22, but an attacking error gave the Blue Jays the second set by a 25-22 score.

SET 3
•
Trailing 4-3 the Garnet scored the next three points to go ahead 6-4.
• Swarthmore held onto the lead until Hopkins scored six consecutive points to tie the match at 22.
• A kill from Louisa Kishton gave JHU set point, but Swarthmore responded with a point of its own to stay in the set.
• The two rivals went back-and-forth before a kill by Michelle Abt and an ace from Esther Hong gave JHU a 29-27 win.

SET 4
• 
A 5-1 run put Johns Hopkins up 9-5 in the set, but the Garnet rallied and eventually tied up the match at 13 on a kill by Isabelle Andrews.
• The Garnet went up 19-16 thanks to a 6-1 run, however, the Blue Jays slowly came back and a kill from Hada put the Blue Jays in the lead, 23-22.
• Swarthmore tied the match at 24 but back-to-back kills from Kishton gave Hopkins a 26-24 win.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays have won eight of the last 11 meetings and are now 29-7 all-time against the Garnet.

Inside the Box Score
• Bliss led the way with 18 kills while Kishton recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 18 digs.
• Hada finished the match with 42 assists while Sarah Khan, Hong, and Abt finished with 12, 16 and 11 digs, respectively.


VASSAR MATCH

The Basics
 
• Score: #25 JHU – 3, Vassar – 2 (13-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-17, 15-10)
• Records: Hopkins (17-3) • Vassar (13-7)
• Location: Swarthmore, PA • Tarble Pavilion
• The Short Story: JHU hung tough against Vassar as the Blue Jays claimed a hard-fought five-set victory over Vassar on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

SET 1
•
Vassar took a 9-5 lead on a 6-0 run and eventually pulled ahead 14-6.
• Back-to-back kills from Kishton made the score 14-8 but the Brewers scored four of the next five points to take an 18-9 lead.
• Vassar ended the set on a 7-2 run to win the set 25-13.

SET 2
• 
The Brewers took a 15-13 lead before Hopkins went on a 3-0 run to pull ahead by one, but Vassar took the lead right back with a 2-0 run.
• A kill from Hannah Korslund tied the match and Johns Hopkins scored eight of the next 10 points, including four-straight to end the match and take a 25-19 set two win.

SET 3
• 
An 7-1 run gave the Brewers a 7-2 lead and they eventually built the lead to 11-5 before the Blue Jays called a timeout.
• Out of the timeout, JHU went on an 8-2 run to even up the set at 13.
• Four more Blue Jay points gave them a 17-13 advantage before Vassar scored six of the next eight points to tie the match at 19.
• With the match tied at 20, the Brewers used a 5-2 run to win the set 25-22 and go up 2-1 in the match.

SET 4
•
With the score 9-4 in favor of Vassar, Hopkins scored seven of the next nine points to tie the set at 11.
• A 7-2 run put JHU up by a score of 21-15, and the Blue Jays scored four of the set's final five points to take a 25-17 set four win and set up a fifth and final set.

SET 5
• Johns Hopkins opened the set on a 5-1 run to force a Vassar timeout.
• The Brewers got to within four points at 14-10 but they would not get any closer as a kill from Kishton sealed the set and the match for Hopkins.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 2-0 all-time against the Brewers.

Inside the Box Score
• Bliss once again led JHU with 18 kills while Kishton recorded her second double-double of the year and 10th this season as she recorded 17 kills and 18 digs.
• Abt finished the match with 11 kills while Korslund and Sasha Gorelik each added six.
• Hada led the team with 48 assists as the sophomore now has 439 assists on the year.
• Hong finished tied for the team lead with 18 digs while Hada finished with 13 and Khan added 12.

Up Next
• The Blue Jays return to the court on Friday, October 19 as they will head to Huntingdon, PA to take on Mary Washington at 5 pm.
