The Short Story:Â The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins water polo team split its first two matches at the annual Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament in Claremont, CA Friday. Hopkins dropped an 11-6 decision to top-ranked Pomona-Pitzer but rebounded with a 16-12 win over fifth-ranked Chapman.

• Hopkins struck first when senior
Giorgio Cico scored just 64 seconds in, but Pomona-Pitzer answered with back-to-back goals to go up 2-1. Sophomore
Olin Shipstead then tied the game with 1:47 to go in the first.
• The Sagehens scored a pair just 39 seconds apart to open the second and take a 4-2 lead. Freshman
Emerson Sullivan and senior
Josh Kurtz responded with a pair and the teams were even at four apiece with 2:26 left in the second. Jacob Niskey scored at 2:01 to put Pomona-Pitzer back on top going into the half.
• Tony Murphy and Sam Gorcy-Biblowitz scored the first two goals of the third quarter and the Sagehens' lead was three. Sullivan picked up his second of the day at the 2:40-mark to cut the deficit to two, but the Sagehens answered with a pair and they led 9-5. Sophomore
Stephen Schmidt would have the final say of the quarter, scoring to make it a four-goal game.
• Pomona-Pitzer would shut down Hopkins, outscoring the Blue Jays 2-0 in the period to grab the 11-6 win.

• The Blue Jays and the Panthers traded goals to open the match but JHU then got back-to-back goals from junior
Finn Banks and freshman
Jayden Kunwar to go up 3-1 at the 4:35-mark. Chapman answered with a goal from Vasil Halchev to slice the deficit in half, but three straight from junior
Nico Ivanov pushed Hopkins' lead to 6-2 at the end of one.
• The Panthers turned the tables on the Blue Jays, outscoring them 6-2 in the second frame to make it an 8-8 game at the half. Chapman picked up where it left off as Cameron Genetti scored a pair to open the third and give the Panthers their first lead of the game.
• Kunwar and Ivanov sandwiched goals around a strike from Graham Asalone and Chapman led 11-10 through three quarters. Banks opened the fourth with three straight goals, in a span of just 83 seconds, sparking a 6-0 run for the Blue Jays. Ivanov capped the run and pushed Hopkins' lead to 16-11 with 1:45 to play. Asalone would get one back for Chapman, but the Panthers would get no closer.
