• The Short Story: After dropping its first match of the season on Wednesday, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team responded with a 3-0 victory over Muhlenberg in Allentown on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
SET 1
•Three-straight Mules errors to open the first set gave the Blue Jays a 3-0 advantage, but a kill from Tara Register followed by three service aces by Register gave the home a 4-3 advantage.
• Hopkins pulled away to an 11-6 lead thanks to back-to-back kills from
Louisa Kishton and
Simone Bliss.
•With the score 16-10, JHU scored three of the next five points to increase its lead to 20-11.
• The Mules got the score to 23-16, however, a Bliss kill followed by an ace gave the Blue Jays the 25-16 set win.
SET 2
•Johns Hopkins opened the second set on a 5-1 run, but the Mules slowly chipped away and an ace by Laura Boll got Muhlenberg to within one at 10-9.
• JHU scored the next three points to take a 13-9 lead on an ace from
Esther Hong.
• A Register kill made the score 13-10 and Hopkins scored five of the next seven points to pull ahead 18-12.
• Three straight Mules' points made the score 18-16, but Muhlenberg got no closer in the set as back-to-back kills from Kishton and
Lauren Anthony gave Hopkins the 25-20 win.
SET 3
• Muhlenberg opened the third set with a 5-2 advantage and eventually pulled out to a five-point lead as back-to-back JHU errors gave the Mules a 9-4 lead.
• The Blue Jays got to within four on a kill from Bliss which made the score 14-10 as Hopkins scored the next three points to pull to within one.
• Kelly Tornetta ended the JHU run with a kill to make the score 16-14, however, Johns Hopkins scored the next two points to tie the match at 16.
• Two more kills from Kishton gave the Blue Jays an 18-16 lead before a kill from Erica Schultz brought the Mules back to within one point.
• A ball handling error by JHU allowed the Mules to tie the match at 19, but Hopkins went on a 6-0 run, capped by a Bliss kill to win the set 25-19 and the match, 3-0.
What it Means
• The Blue Jays are 23-6 all-time against the Mules and have won the last five meetings.
• The two teams have not played a five-set match since 2009 when Muhlenberg defeated JHU, overall the two Centennial rivals have only played two five-set matches.
Inside the Box Score
• Hong had a career-high 35 assists in the match and also added nine digs.
• Kishton had 13 kills and a team-high 14 digs as she notched her seventh double-double of the year.
• Bliss recorded a team-best 15 kills and also had eight digs in the match.
•
Michelle Abt finished the match with eight kills and 11 digs.
