March 22, 2018

Box Score

The Basics
- Score: #18 Penn State-13, #22 Johns Hopkins-12 (OT)
- Records: JHU (7-4, 0-2 B1G) - PSU (7-4, 2-0 B1G)
- Location: University Park, PA - Penn State Lacrosse Field

- The Short Story: Katie O'Donnell scored her third goal of the game just 27 seconds into overtime to lift 18th-ranked Penn State to a 13-12 victory over visiting Johns Hopkins in Big Ten women's lacrosse action Thursday night.

How it Happened
- Penn State led by four on four different occasions, including 10-6 early in the second half on O'Donnell's second of the game less than three minutes into the second half.
- The 10-6 lead was gone in seven minutes as sophomore Maggie Schneidereith jump-started a four-goal Johns Hopkins run with back-to-back goals in an 87-second span to quickly cut the deficit in half.
- Just over two minutes after Schneidereith made it 10-8, junior Miranda Ibello went low on a free position shot and senior CeCe Finney tied the game at 10-10 just under two minutes later after converting a nifty pass from classmate Shannon Fitzgerald.
- The tie lasted for just over one minute before Penn State's Maria Auth dodged from the top of the arc and ripped a left-hander home. Less than three minutes later the game was even again as Mackenzie Heldberg added her second goal of the game on a free position shot to make it 11-11 with more than 16 minutes remaining.
- Nearly 10 minutes dripped off the clock before Penn State got another strike from Auth, but Schneidereith's fifth of the game with 4:56 on the clock forced the fourth and final tie of the game at 12-12.
- The Blue Jays had two golden opportunities in the final three minutes to take the lead, but Penn State came up with a turnover with 2:45 remaining in regulation and the Blue Jays failed to get off a shot on their final possession late in regulation to send the game to overtime, where O'Donnell wasted no time netting the game-winner.
- Heldberg and Fitzgerald gave Johns Hopkins a 2-0 lead exactly one minute into the game, but the Nittany Lions responded with a 7-1 run over an 18-minute span to turn the early two-goal deficit into a 7-3 lead. Seven different players scored for Penn State during the run, including O'Donnell and Auth. Only a Schneidereith free position goal, which knotted the game at 3-3, disrupted the spree for Penn State.
- The Blue Jays had the 7-3 deficit down to 8-5 at the half as freshman Shelby Harrison and Ibello sandwiched goals around Auth's second of the game in the final 8:26 of the first half.
- Madison Carter and O'Donnell bookended a Schneidereith strike in the first 2:23 of the second half to make it 10-6. That set the stage for the Schneidereith-fueled four-goal run that tied the game at 10 with just over 20 minutes remaining in regulation.

What it Means
- The Blue Jays dropped their second straight after winning four in a row. Three of Johns Hopkins' four losses on the year have come by just one goal.
- Schneidereith scored a career-high five goals - she had previously netted four goals on three different occasions.
- Ibello had one assist to move into seventh-place on JHU's Division I career assist list (51).
