• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team opened the season with a 12-5 loss to 13th-ranked Princeton Saturday morning at Navy. The Blue Jays followed that with a 9-8 win over the Fordham Rams to end the first day of the Navy Labor Day Open with a 1-1 record.
 
How it Happened • Princeton
• It was a tightly contested first half as the Tigers took a slim 5-3 lead into the lockerroom. Princeton struck first midway through the first quarter, but Hopkins answered with goals from senior Ryan Masi and freshman Jayden Kunwar. Princeton would tie the game with just four ticks remaining in the quarter on a five-meter shot.
• The teams traded goals to open the second quarter and it was 3-3 with 5:04 to go. Princeton would tack on two more goals in the final four minutes to take a 5-3 lead at the half. The Tigers picked up where they left off, scoring the first two goals of the third quarter to push out to a 7-4 lead. Freshman Emerson Sullivan scored at the 5:22-mark to end the run, but Princeton answered with a pair to go up 8-5 at the end of the quarter. The Tiger would outscore the Blue Jays, 4-0, in the fourth to grab the win.
 
How it Happened • Fordham
• Fordham took a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the first quarter, but Hopkins answered with three straight goals to go up 3-2 by the end of the period. The second quarter was a carbon copy of the first as the Rams scored two in a row, followed by three in a row for the Blue Jays and Hopkins led 6-4 at the half. Six different players scored for Hopkins the first half.
• Fordham once again opened the scoring in the third to pull within one, but Kunwar answered for the Jays to push the lead to 7-5. The Rams responded with a pair of goals at 2:47 and 0:04 to tie the game at 7-7. Kunwar added his second of the game, scoring as time expired to put JHU on top heading into the final quarter.
• As they had all game, the Rams struck first in the quarter, leveling the score at 8 with 4:22 to play. Just 30 seconds later, Sullivan scored to give the Blue Jays back the lead. The Hopkins defense would make the lead hold up.   
 
What it Means
• Hopkins falls to 5-50 all-time against Princeton and improves to 20-5 against Fordham.
 
Inside the Box Score
• Masi, Sullivan and Kunwar led the Blue Jays with three goals apiece. Senior Josh Kurtz scored a pair and now has 99 career goals.

• Hopkins takes on Lindenwood at 11:30 am in Lejeune Hall and La Salle at 3:15 pm in Scott Natatorium on Sunday, September 2 to close out the Labor Day Open.
